At RCS, we strive to build a school culture that is both joyful and rigorous, where students are empowered to write their own narratives through meaningful work and creative expression.Position OverviewWe are seeking a passionate, energetic, and dedicated Elementary School Music Teacher to join our Fine Arts team. The ideal candidate will not only teach music but also foster a lifelong appreciation for the arts among our diverse student body.You will be responsible for delivering a dynamic, sequential music curriculum that builds musical proficiency, creativity, and confidence. As an RCS educator, you will play a critical role in our extended school day, using music as a vehicle to support literacy, cultural awareness, and social-emotional growth.Key ResponsibilitiesInstructional LeadershipCurriculum Delivery: Design and implement engaging lesson plans for general music classes (grades K-5) that align with the New York State Learning Standards for the Arts.Skill Development: Instruct students in the fundamentals of music theory, rhythm, pitch, and notation, utilizing diverse pedagogies (e.g., Orff, Kodály, Dalcroze).Instrumental & Vocal Coaching: Introduce students to various instruments (percussion, recorder, ukulele, etc.) and lead age-appropriate choral instruction to develop vocal technique.Differentiation: Adapt instruction to meet the needs of all learners, including students with disabilities and English Language Learners (ELLs), ensuring music is accessible to every child.Assessment: Monitor student growth using both formative and summative assessments, maintaining accurate records of student progress.School Culture & PerformanceConcerts & Events: Plan, rehearse, and direct school-wide musical performances (Winter and Spring Concerts, graduation ceremonies, and multicultural assemblies).Talent Development: Identify and mentor students for participation in NYSSMA festivals, SCMEA, and other local/state opportunities.Collaboration: Partner with classroom teachers to integrate music into core subjects (e.g., using songs to aid memory in Math or ELA) and support the school’s "solution-oriented" mindset.Classroom Management: Maintain a warm, structured, and disciplined classroom environment that maximizes learning time and fosters mutual respect.QualificationsRequired:Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education or a related field (Master’s Degree preferred).Certification: Valid New York State Teaching Certification in Music (K-12).Experience: Previous experience teaching elementary general music or chorus is highly preferred.Commitment: belief in the RCS mission and the ability to work in an extended-day, high-energy environment.Preferred Skills:Proficiency in piano or guitar for classroom accompaniment.Experience with Google Classroom and music technology software.Bilingual (Spanish/English) is a strong plus, given our diverse community.Compensation & BenefitsRiverhead Charter School offers a highly competitive compensation package that rewards experience and dedication.Benefits: Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance.Retirement: Participation in the NYS Teachers’ Retirement System (TRS).Professional Development: Opportunities for tuition reimbursement, specialized training, and sabbatical leave for long-term staff.How to ApplyInterested candidates should submit the following to [jobs@rcsli.org]:Current Resume/CV.Cover Letter detailing your philosophy on music education and why you are a good fit for Riverhead Charter School.Copy of NYS Certification.Riverhead Charter School is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
