General Purpose of the JobResponsible for creating and implementing a specially designed program of developmental activities, games, sports and rhythms suited to the interest and capabilities, and limitations of students with special needs who require a specially designed Physical Education class according to their Individualized Education Plan. Job ObjectivesAPE Teacher will design and implement an instructional adaptive physical education program for students that is consistent with the educational philosophy and goals of the program as well as Regulations, Recommendations and Resources from The State Education Department. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:Possess the health and energy necessary to meet the responsibilities of the position.Display poise and maturity in their relations with fellow staff, parents and children.Use effective English in their oral and written communication.Maintain a pleasant working relationship with all of their colleagues in their professional capacity.Punctual in meeting responsibilities, i.e., submitting reports.Identify strengths and weakness of school age and preschool students attending the education program.Instruct students, using adapted physical education techniques, to improve physical fitness, gross motor skills, perceptual motor skills, or sports and game achievement.Adapt instructional techniques to the age and skill level of the student.Work in collaboration with teachers, clinicians and support staff in planning and developing the program.Use appropriate assessment instruments to assess students’ physical progress or needs.Create individual adapted physical education goal(s) for students 5yrs. and older that will be implemented into each student’s IEP.Complete quarterly and annual progress reporting to principal/assistant principal, parents, school district and county (as appropriate).Prepare lesson plans that are appropriate for each student’s needs (in accordance with each student’s IEP) and are in accordance with the NYS Physical Education Learning Standards. Record quarterly notes in IEP Direct or comparable program on each student’s goals and objectives.Direct support staff as appropriate during adapted physical education classes and special events that are coordinated by the adapted physical education teacher.Assist in the planning and participation of all special events scheduled during the school day throughout the school year.Plan and coordinate the Annual Field Day.Demonstrate classroom management and utilize effective behavioral interventions.Establish and maintain standards of behavior to create a clean, safe, orderly, and effective environment for learning (including gym, equipment, materials and aids).Maintain an ongoing inventory of instructional equipment, materials, or aids.Develop and conduct an in-service for teachers and support staff of the goals and objectives of adaptive physical education.Communicate with families on a monthly basis via newsletter, etc.Maintain thorough student records to document attendance, participation, or progress, ensuring confidentiality of all records.Consults, as needed, with members of the students’ treatment team.Participates in staff meetings, team meetings etc.Develop APE schedule for students to meet the requirements of the NYSED APE mandates.Support the MOVE philosophy during APE class and other school wide events/activities.Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Educational Services/Principal, Assistant Principal or designee.Supervisory Responsibilities Directly supervises teacher aides. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; assists Assistant Principal in appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Education and/or Experience, Certificates, Licenses, RegistrationsHold at least a Bachelor of Science, preferably a Master of Science, from an accredited College or University. NYS Certification as a Special Education Adaptive Physical Education Teacher/Physical Education Teacher. Previous teaching experience preferred.
