The Henry Johnson Charter School (HJCS) is a K-4 elementary school with approximately 350 students enrolled. HJCS in Albany’s historic West Hill neighborhood. HJCS has an immediate opening for a School Social Worker. Candidates must have a valid NYS certification. This position will report to the Head of School. The School Social Worker will operate with administration, instructional team members and parents to develop plans and strategies to help improve students’ academic performance and social emotional development. Students and their families may be referred to the social worker to address opportunities to improve challenges such as making positive choices or frequent absences from school.This position requires a high degree of self-awareness, knowledge on the educational impacts of trauma and creativity when it comes to addressing the needs of students. The HJCS Social Worker will evaluate, recommend, and implement an individual social work program for individuals and ensure services are provided in accordance with the scholars’ needs. They will assess, track, and provide relevant and timely feedback on achievement and developmental needs to students, families, and colleagues. They will maintain a strong home, school, and community connection.The School Social Worker will work within a diverse environment of dynamic learners. This position will require a high degree of creativity, cultural awareness, and problem-solving capabilities. The intent of the program is to develop independence and choice within the scope of scholars’ skills and abilities.School Social Worker Expectations Successful intervention work with high poverty populations; Ability to articulate their understanding of and support for high academic expectations; through their work with students and families; Able to articulate the barriers and strategies for overcoming those barriers of working with students and families in an urban setting; Knowledge of and linkage to community agencies and resources available to families and children; Skill in collection and analyzing data needed to plan for student centered interventions and ability to articulate this to other staff; Must be able to develop and implement FBA’s and BIP's; Work with students to build resiliency and strengthen their assets to enable them to improve their pro-social skills within the school and community; Knowledge of Cognitive Behavioral Supports, Culturally Responsive Education Anti-Racist policies and Trauma sensitive practices; Able to be empathetic by caring, understanding, and cultivating an empowering environment for all students; Demonstrates patience with serious issues, students and families; Able to be dependable in ways that develop trust with students; Willing to be flexible and multitask as needed on demand; Willingness to learn, in order to be relatable, flexible, personable and adaptable; Experience working in schools and with children preferred; Helps develop annual individualized education plan (IEP) goals and objectives; Develops appropriate treatment plans, based on a student’s IEP's; Provides services as indicated on annual IEP; Provides comprehensive psychosocial services using methods and instruments appropriate to the developmental age and needs of the student; Provides assistance as necessary to management and team during student/family crisis and/or suspected child abuse/neglect screening and reporting; This service includes crisis intervention, transition plans, consultation, case management and coordination; Proper NYS School Social Work certification required. Preferred candidates will have their NYS clinical license and have experience working with special education students; Provide collateral services with family members or other service providers to ensure consistency in social work services; and provide training to program staff, as requested.Applications will be accepted through OLAS only.
