Position Overview The Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction serves as a key member of the Superintendent’s Cabinet and provides strategic leadership, direction, and oversight of all instructional programs across the District. This role is responsible for ensuring the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of a coherent, standards-aligned instructional program that meets the diverse academic, linguistic, and social-emotional needs of all students. The Assistant Superintendent will lead districtwide efforts to improve student outcomes, with a particular focus on supporting multilingual learners and students in a large, diverse urban-suburban district. The position requires a systems-oriented leader who can build coherence across schools, develop leadership capacity, and ensure accountability for results. Key Responsibilities Instructional Leadership Develop and implement a comprehensive, districtwide vision for curriculum, instruction, and assessment aligned with New York State Learning Standards. Lead initiatives to improve teaching and learning, including the implementation of high-impact instructional strategies. Ensure consistency, rigor, and coherence in curriculum and instructional practices across all schools. Oversee the development and use of assessment systems to monitor student progress and inform instruction. Support for Multilingual and Diverse Learners Ensure instructional programs effectively address the needs of multilingual learners and a culturally diverse student population. Promote culturally responsive and inclusive instructional practices across the District. Collaborate with leaders to strengthen supports for English Language Learners (ELLs) and students with diverse learning needs. Leadership Development and Supervision Supervise and evaluate Executive Directors, Directors, Principals, and other assigned staff. Build leadership capacity through coaching, professional development, and performance management systems. Establish clear expectations and accountability structures for instructional leadership at all levels. Professional Development Design and oversee a comprehensive professional learning plan aligned with district priorities and instructional goals. Ensure professional development is sustained, job-embedded, and focused on improving classroom practice and student outcomes. Program Oversight and Evaluation Oversee the implementation and evaluation of instructional programs and initiatives. Utilize data and research-based frameworks to assess program effectiveness and guide decision-making. Ensure compliance with all state and federal requirements related to curriculum and instruction. Collaboration and Communication Serve as a primary liaison between the Superintendent, Cabinet, school leaders, and instructional staff. Communicate clearly and effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including the Board of Education. Foster a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, and shared accountability. Operational Excellence Ensure strong systems for follow-up, implementation monitoring, and accountability. Maintain a high level of attention to detail in planning, execution, and reporting. Support the development and management of the instructional budget in alignment with district priorities. Minimum Qualifications Valid New York State School District Leader (SDL) or School District Administrator (SDA) certification. Master’s degree required; advanced degree (Doctorate preferred). Minimum of five (5) years of successful administrative experience, including building and/or district-level leadership. Preferred Qualifications Prior experience as an Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction or in a comparable central office leadership role. Demonstrated success in improving student achievement in a large, diverse school district. Extensive experience addressing the needs of multilingual learners and culturally diverse student populations. Bilingual or multilingual proficiency preferred. Experience supervising and evaluating administrators. Strong knowledge of curriculum development, instructional best practices, assessment systems, and school improvement strategies.
