Job Summary/Objective: The Principal is responsible for providing effective leadership and management to ensure the smooth operation of the school, fostering an environment conducive to learning and personal growth for both students and staff.Essential Functions:Leadership and Management:• Provide visionary leadership, setting clear goals and expectations for staff, students, and parents.• Develop and implement strategic plans to improve student achievement and overall school performance.• Foster a positive and inclusive school culture that values diversity, respect, and collaboration.• Establish effective communication channels to ensure the dissemination of information to staff, students, and parents.• Lead, manage and inspire a team of educators and support staff, promoting professional growth and development.• Develop and enhance staff skills to provide more effective teaching and learning experiences for students.• Ensure that staff comply with staff development requirements of regulatory agencies.• Evaluate staff at least annually and more frequently if there are issues, including writing PIPs (Performance Improvement Plans) in a timely manner.• Collaborate with Human Resources to recruit and hire staff for school programs according to VCLC’s hiring policies.• Manage the day-to-day operation of the school building, navigating these challenges with diplomacy and confidence.Curriculum Development and Implementation:• Oversee the development and implementation of a curriculum aligned with state standards.• Collaborate with teachers to ensure effective instructional practices and differentiated learning opportunities for all students.• Monitor and evaluate curriculum used, making necessary adjustments to meet the changing needs of students.Student Support:• Promote a safe and inclusive learning environment, ensuring the physical and emotional well-being of students.• Establish and enforce school-wide policies and procedures that maintain and promote positive behavior.• Collaborate with teachers, and support staff to identify and address the needs of students with diverse backgrounds and abilities.• Ensure that student progress is monitored through data.• Support the education team in utilizing pre and post tests to aid the development of individualized student goals and strategies to support struggling students and ensure their success.• Work within a team to screen and place incoming students, which best reflects their current level of need.Parent and Engagement:• Foster strong relationships with parents and guardians to create a supportive and collaborative learning environment.• Collaborate with Family Services to organize regular parent meetings, workshops, and other events to promote effective communication and involvement.• Participate in required meetings including but not limited Back to School Night and New Family orientations.Budget and Resource Management:• Oversee the allocation of resources, including staffing, materials, technology, and facilities, to support effective teaching and learning.Perform other tasks (which may require knowledge of other job descriptions) as may seem to be appropriate and/or requested by the Director of Programs and Chief Executive Officer.Core Competencies:• Demonstrated ability to lead and inspire a diverse group of professionals.• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills.• Excellent organization and time management skills.• Proficient in technology usage for educational purposes.• Excellent relationship management skills.• Excellent judgement and sensitivity to confidential information.• Deep understanding of educational best practices, legal requirements, and ethical considerations.Supervisory Responsibility: Education/Curriculum coordinators, Childcare Director, Administrative support staff.Work Environment: This job operates in a school environment. Activities usually take place in the classroom, gym, outside on the playground or in special activity rooms. This role typically uses standard office equipment such as laptops, computers, printer/fax/scanner, telephone, shredderPhysical Demands: This role is physically demanding. The employee is required to be non-sedentary and must be able to stand, run, walk, sit, bend, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel and crouch. The employee must be able to lift an average preschool age child (35 pounds) and/or a school-age child (50 pounds).Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: This is a full-time position, Monday through Friday, typically 35 hours per week, but additional hours may be required outside of the typical workday, including weekends. Work schedules should be set according to be available for education staff. There is a ½ hour unpaid lunch break. The school operates 12 months out of the year. All employees are expected to arrive on time for work and complete their regularly scheduled shift.Travel: There may be required travel between VCLC’s sites in accordance with assigned caseload. At times, mandated trainings and/or meetings for this role may require travel to an alternate local location.Required Education and Experience:• Master’s degree in Education• Valid New York State School Building Leadership certification (SBL)• Minimum of 2 years of experience in educational leadership, including administrative roles.• Strong knowledge of New York State education laws, regulations, and curriculum standards.Preferred Education and Experience of Preferred Certifications:• School District Leadership Certification (SDL) a plus• NYS Students with Disabilities (Birth – Grade 2) Permanent Professional Certification, or a NYS Special Education Permanent Certification with classroom experienceAdditional Eligibility Qualifications:• Must maintain annual medical clearance.• Must complete the required number of training hours as specified in the VCLC Staff Development Policies covering required OCFS categories.• Must complete mandated training as designated by VCLC administration, including but not limited to Discrimination & Harassment Training, Compliance Training, Safety Training, NCI Training, and any other Best Practice Trainings.• Must keep required Professional Certifications current.• Must be a mandated reporter.• Must be proficient in the use of Office 365 including Word and Excel, iPad, Smart Board.Work Authorization/Security Clearance: Must obtain and maintain all mandated security clearances.Job Classification: ExemptOther Duties: Please note this job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required of the employee for this job.
