TITLE: Itinerant Teacher – Farm to School Certified PositionPart-Time .8 FTE (10-month) Temporary Affiliation: Teachers’ Association1 Position, Location: TST BOCES J-Building &Regional School Success Newfield DUTIES: This educator will be essential for connecting the work of the school cafeteria to a wide variety of student-centered environmental educational programs. The Farm to School Itinerant Teacher will work collaboratively with food services staff and a variety of community partners to increase connection to and involvement with classrooms, school gardening programs, local food pantries, wellness committees, and project-based, place-based, and environmentally friendly STEAM-based learning opportunities. Typical Work Activities: Co-create experiences for our students to investigate the intersections between food justice and social justice through the creation of a unit(s) of study focused on food in their community (who has it, who does not, and why). Work with faculty and staff to develop and support a food-based curriculum, and the development of on campus gardens Collaborate with faculty and staff to provide classroom experiences that elevate understanding and practices focused on the intersection of food and Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) organized around instructional pathways that include agriculture/foodways and entrepreneurship. Coordinate activities between school food-based entities, i.e. gardening club, wellness committee, STEAM Team, and community-based food entities including our local farmers market, the harvest project, local farmers, etc. Collaborate with Food Services to launch tasting, cooking, and food exploration opportunities featuring NYS produce and/ or products Partner with Regional Staff and food service providers to establish and support a larger Farm to School committee Pursue grant opportunities to help fund our work. Other duties as assigned.QUALIFICATIONS:? Must possess NYS Teacher Certification in one of the following areas: Agriculture – occupational, Agricultural Production, Science & Business, Plant Science, Natural Resources & Ecology, Home Economics – occupational, Agricultural Engineering & Mechanics, or Elementary Education with demonstrated knowledge, skills and professional experiences in agriculture, food, and/or entrepreneurship. Interpersonal and tech skills necessary to communicate clearly and effectively through verbal, written and electronic methods Ability to initiate, plan, organize, implement, teach, and evaluate informal educational programs for diverse audiences Time management skills necessary to plan, schedule and facilitate project related meetings and consultations Certified teachers with previous experiences working in agriculture, food and/or permaculture, community gardening, home economics or culinary careers are encouraged to apply for considerationSTART DATE: As soon as possibleSALARY: $52,000.00 (2023-2024 base salary), plus additional salary credit for appropriate prior experience, Masters Degree and Grad Credits.
