Title: Special Education TeacherThe special education teacher will work with students who have a wide range of learning, mental, emotional, and physical disabilities. They will adapt general education lessons and teach various subjects, such as reading, writing, and mathematics, to students with disabilities. The special education teacher will collaboratively develop IEPs specific to each student’s needs and work with general education teachers to present information in a manner that a student with a disabilities can more easily understand. Experience teaching and supporting learning with technology.Duties and Responsibilities:Assess students’ skills to determine their needsAdapt lessons to meet the needs of students while meeting NYS learning standards and develop Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with the assistance of the Committee on Special EducationUse co-teaching, consultant teacher, and small group or one-to-one instructional methods to meet student learning needsEffectively implement IEPs, assess students’ performance, and track their progressUpdate IEPs throughout the school year to reflect students’ progress and goalsConsult with other educators when a student is not on track behaviorally or academically and provide input and implement strategies and interventions which lead to student successDiscuss students’ progress with parents, other teachers, counselors, and administratorsSupervise and mentor teaching assistants who work with students with disabilitiesFollow Part 100 and Part 200 regulations and NYS education law and maintain accurate recordsPrepare and help students transition from grade to grade and for life after graduationParticipate in the referral, classification, and placement procedures utilized by the Committee on Special Education.Performs other duties and responsibilities related to the role of a special education teacher as requested by the superintendent or principal.
