JOB DESCRIPTION: SCHOOL NURSE Title: School Nurse Location: Story Place Preschool, Inc. Person Responsible To: Preschool Leader and Story Place Preschool, Inc. Number of Staff Supervised: 0 Education and/or Experience Prerequisites: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing with experience working pediatrics (preferably preschool) or Registered Nurse with experience working with low income families and preschool children with special needs. I. Basic Function: Responsible for providing support and direct service to the children enrolled in Story Place Preschool, Inc. Provide consultation to staff concerning child and staff issues. Responsible for providing on-site and emergency medical and health care. II. Responsibilities: 1. To be in attendance at the preschool for the agreed upon number of hours during preschool hours to assist with questions regarding health and safety of children attending the preschool. 2. Monitor the accuracy of documentation of the daily health reviews provided by the staff in each classroom. 3. Provide in service training to staff members (on a regular and as needed basis) on medication dispersal, universal precautions and health and safety of the preschool child. 4. Monitor current immunizations of children attending the preschool. 5. Monitor the medication currently being administered. a.Insure prescription medication is dispensed upon written order of a physician stating that the preschool may administer such medication and specifying the circumstances, if any, under which the medication cannot be dispensed. b.Obtain written instructions from the parent c.Insure that prescription medications are in the original container and labeled with the child's complete name, the medication name, recommended dosage, time intervals for administration, method of administration, expiration date and prescriber's name and license number. d.Monitor that all medications at the preschool are stored according to the instructions on the label, kept beyond the reach of children and are returned to the parent when no longer needed. e.Insure that topical ointments are applied as needed for protection against the sun or diaper rash under written parental instructions. f. Safeguard that the parent/ guardian brings in all prescription medication to the school. For safety and liability purposes, transportation companies will not transport a child who is in possession of said drugs. g.Insure that the individual administering the medication documents medication that is dispensed at the preschool. Documentation includes the name of the child, medication dispensed, date and time of administration, and signature of the person who administers the medication. h.The nurse will monitor the medication dispersal log for each child receiving medication. i. The nurse is responsible for contacting parents for expired medication and prescription. 6. Monitor current employee medicals to ensure that an annual physical evaluation has occurred within the proper timeframe and that the employee is in physical condition to provide child care services. 7. Maintain the First Aid Kit in the main office and each of the classrooms with appropriate items as listed below. 8. Maintain a First Aid Kit which may be easily transported on field trips from the preschool. 9. Provides assistance to Preschool Leader as requested. 10. Adheres to policies and procedure established by Story Place Preschool, Inc. in the Employee Handbook.
