The Hewlett-Woodmere School District is seeking an 1.0 FTE Attendance Counselor with a start date of August 27, 2025The Attendance Counselor serves as an intervention specialist focused on addressing chronic absenteeism among high school students. This position implements proactive, data-driven strategies to improve student attendance through behavioral intervention, family engagement, and systematic support services. The role is critical to reversing declining graduation rates and reducing student loss to alternative educational programs, summer school, and Twilight.Behavioral Intervention & CounselingProvide individual and group counseling to students with chronic absenteeism patternsIdentify and address underlying factors contributing to attendance problems including mental health, substance abuse, family crisis, transportation, and academic strugglesDevelop individualized attendance intervention plans with measurable goals and timelinesImplement restorative practices that focus on student accountability and positive behavior changeCoordinate referrals to appropriate support services and community resourcesFamily Partnership & EngagementEstablish collaborative relationships with families to understand barriers to regular attendanceConduct home visits when appropriate to assess environmental factors affecting attendanceFacilitate family conferences to develop sustainable attendance improvement strategiesProvide families with resources and support systems to address root causes of absenteeismMaintain regular communication with parents/guardians regarding student progressMulti-Disciplinary CoordinationServe as primary liaison between teaching staff, school administrators, and Pupil Personnel ServicesCollaborate with school counselors, social workers, psychologists, and mental health professionalsWork closely with teachers to identify early warning signs of attendance declineCoordinate with school administration on attendance policy enforcement (#5100) and interventionsPartner with community agencies and organizations to provide wraparound servicesData Management & ReportingGenerate monthly progress reports on attendance intervention outcomesConduct weekly administrative reviews of student attendance data and intervention effectivenessMaintain detailed case management records for all assigned studentsTrack and analyze attendance trends to identify systemic issues and successful intervention strategiesPrepare presentations for school board, administration, and stakeholder meetingsProfessional Development & TrainingPresent attendance strategies, trends, and best practices to faculty and staffProvide professional development workshops on early identification of at-risk studentsStay current on research-based attendance intervention practicesParticipate in district-wide attendance committee meetings and initiativesMentor and train attendance support staffRun a summer institute for students focused on the college application and admissions process and post-secondary opportunitiesREQUIRED QUALIFICATIONSEducation & CertificationMaster's degree in School CounselingValid state certification in School Counseling Experience Experience as a school counselor preferredAssist with the supervision and processing of college applicationsDevelop/foster relationships with college admissions officeUnderstanding of pathways for graduationSkills & CompetenciesStrong interpersonal and communication skills with diverse populationsProficiency in data analysis and report generationCrisis intervention and de-escalation techniquesKnowledge of adolescent development and learning barriersCultural competency and sensitivity to socioeconomic factorsProficiency in Infinite Campus
