Located in the Capital District of upstate New York, Cohoes City School District is a small city school district with a warm, welcoming “small town” atmosphere. With the goal of immersing students in learning to become creative thinkers, life-long learners and effective problem-solvers, the ideal candidate is committed to student academic success. We are seeking highly qualified (NYS certified) applicants to apply to this School Counselor vacancy – located in Cohoes High School. However, we will consider individuals who are currently in the process of obtaining their NYS certification as School Counselor and will be certified by September 1, 2026. NYS school counselors serve as leaders, advocates, and collaborators within the school system. Their primary duties include: Individual & Group Counseling: Providing short-term counseling to help students manage personal challenges, peer relationships, and emotional regulation. Academic Advisement: Conducting individual progress reviews (specifically for grades 6-12) to ensure students are on track for graduation and post-secondary goals. College & Career Readiness: Assisting with college applications, financial aid (FAFSA), vocational training, and "Working Papers" (employment certificates). Consultation & Collaboration: Working with parents, teachers, and administrators to develop interventions for students struggling with attendance or behavior. Referrals: Acting as a "triage" point to refer families to intensive mental health services or community agencies when needs exceed the scope of school-based counseling. Skills required include: Excellent student engagement skills with a goal of providing meaningful support in the primary duties Excellent parent engagement and relationship building skills Participates with colleagues as a collaborative team player Experience in Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) Understands urban schools and communities Supports the district goals of equity, literacy and graduation concerning all students Ability to inspire students to learn and make learning fun Models a growth mindset Ability to use technology Please apply through OLAS with a letter of interest, your resume, proof of certification and any supporting materials including at least 3 professional (supervisory) letters of reference.
