This position is ideal for an educator passionate about helping diverse learners, including students with disabilities, build essential reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. Job Description The Special Education Teacher (Reading Focus) provides targeted literacy instruction and intervention within special education and inclusive classroom settings. This role includes delivering standards-aligned English Language Arts instruction while addressing the individualized needs of students with disabilities. The teacher works with individuals and small groups to address specific reading challenges and collaborates with general education teachers to integrate literacy strategies across content areas. The position involves ongoing assessment of student progress, development and implementation of IEP goals, and the use of data to guide instruction and improve student outcomes. Job Responsibilities Provide integrated ELA instruction within special education settings (resource, ICT, or self-contained as applicable) Deliver targeted reading interventions for students requiring additional literacy support Develop and implement IEP goals aligned to literacy development and New York State learning standards Assess student reading levels and monitor progress using formal and informal tools Use data-driven instruction to inform teaching practices and adjust interventions Design and implement differentiated instruction to meet diverse learning needs Support development of decoding, fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and written expression Collaborate with general education teachers to support co-teaching and inclusive practices Communicate regularly with students, families, and staff regarding student progress Maintain accurate records and participate in CSE and student support meetings Foster a literacy-rich, inclusive classroom environment Engage in ongoing professional development and contribute to the school community Maintain accurate records and contribute to student support team meetings Engage in ongoing professional development and contribute positively to the school community Qualifications Required Qualifications Valid New York State Teaching Certification in: Students with Disabilities (Grades 7–12) English Language Arts (Grades 7–12) or eligibility for dual certification Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, English Education, Literacy, or related field Knowledge of adolescent literacy development and evidence-based reading instruction Experience developing and implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) Ability to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners Strong classroom management, communication, and collaboration skills Commitment to inclusive educational practices and student-centered learning Required Qualifications Valid New York State Teaching Certification in: Students with Disabilities (Grades 7–12) English Language Arts (Grades 7–12) or eligibility for dual certification Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, English Education, Literacy, or related field Knowledge of adolescent literacy development and evidence-based reading instruction Experience developing and implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) Ability to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners Strong classroom management, communication, and collaboration skills Commitment to inclusive educational practices and student-centered learning Required: Valid New York State Teaching Certification in: Students with Disabilities (Grades 7–12) English Language Arts (Grades 7–12) Preferred: Certification in Literacy (Birth–Grade 12) or coursework in reading instruction Demonstrated expertise in adolescent literacy and intervention strategies Knowledge of evidence-based literacy frameworks such as: Science of Reading Structured Literacy Orton-Gillingham Wilson Reading System Experience working with diverse learners , including students with disabilities Strong understanding of data-driven instruction and progress monitoring Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills Equal Employment Opportunity Statement Tuckahoe Union Free School District is an Equal Opportunity Employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, creed, national origin, citizenship status, age, disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, marital status, military status, genetic information, or any other characteristic protected by applicable law.
