The Principal ensures a safe, pleasant, and effective educational atmosphere, provides discipline as necessary, and enforces school policy. The Principal provides leadership in all areas of instruction. The Principal supervises all employees in the school and is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of instructional and support staff in the school.Required and Preferred Qualifications Valid NYS School Administrator/Supervisor (SAS), or School Building Leader (SBL) certificate Minimum requirement is Master’s degree with substantial coursework in curriculum, instruction, and supervision Minimum five-years classroom teaching experience at the elementary level required Minimum three years’ experience in administration and supervision preferred; other experiences at the district/school level will be given consideration as deemed appropriate to the position Knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, and current trends in school administration Excellent writing, speaking, and problem-solving skills Ability to work productively with students, parents/guardians, staff, community, residents and colleaguesReports to: Superintendent of Schools or his/her designeeDuties and ResponsibilitiesThe duties and responsibilities of the Principal include, but are not limited to:1. Organization and Administration of the School Maintain an educational philosophy and school climate which encourages a cooperative and participatory attitude on the part of all staff and students. Encourage and initiate improvement in curriculum and instructional methods in cooperation with the administrative team, subject area specialists, and faculty. Ensure the implementation of all policies, rules, and regulations of the Board of Education and the Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee. Promote a positive school climate that prioritizes belonging and respect among all individuals. Perform all duties presented by law, e.g., fire and other safety regulations.2. Personnel and Financial Management Interview and select qualified certified personnel to be recommended for appointment. Orient new staff to the school. Supervise, conduct annual performance appraisals, and make recommendations for appropriate employment actions. Assign and schedule teachers and students. Assist with preparation of the school budget and work with District and school level staff on budgeting and purchasing matters.3. School Building Coordinate the school’s maintenance and facility needs with the District’s Business Manager and Buildings and Grounds personnel. Supervise and manage the school to assure safety and efficiency. Provide leadership for the care and safekeeping of the school and grounds, and all furniture, books, apparatus, equipment, technology, and other related materials and supplies.4. Professional Development and Growth Participate and lead in district-wide activities, in-service workshops, and committees as appropriate. Use data, action research, and regular feedback to improve programs and practices regarding curricular and instructional matters in the school. Attend professional conferences, seminars and professional development opportunities as per contract and / or superintendent recommendation.5. School-Community Relations Participate as an active member of the Shared Decision Making Team, School Safety Team, and school Parent-Teachers’ Association. Maintain positive relations with parents, parent groups, school volunteers, and outside agencies affecting the school. Maintain effective and proactive communication to keep staff, students, parents and guardians properly informed. Actively promote a vision and mission for the school in collaboration with all stakeholder groups. Be visible at various school-sponsored events involving staff, parents, and students. Attend meetings of the Board of Education upon request of the Superintendent and provide school data/information as appropriate to share with the Board.Employment InformationThe Principal is directly responsible to the Superintendent for the proper conduct of his/her assigned duties and responsibilitiesTerms of Employment: Eleven (11) Month Four-year Probationary Appointment Member of the Scotia-Glenville Administrators’ Association Salary Starting in the low $90’s or Commensurate with Experience Excellent Benefits Package
