About Questar III BOCES announces a vacancy for a full-time probationary Teaching Assistant position for our Career and Technical Education (CTE) Automotive Technology class located at our Robert H. Gibson Technical School in Troy, NY. We are looking for a mechanically-minded, student-focused Teaching Assistant to join our Automotive Technology program. In this role, you’ll bridge the gap between theory and the shop floor, helping high school students transition from "learning how it works" to "fixing it themselves." You’ll work alongside a Lead Instructor to maintain a safe, professional garage environment that mirrors the industry, ensuring students master the skills needed for ASE certification and entry-level career placement. Utilizing state-of-the art professional tools and computer systems, students learn automotive repair and maintenance skills. Under the direction of a certified CTE Teacher, the Teaching Assistant will assist in the delivery of instruction and management of safe classroom behaviors. This is a two-year program based on the National Automotive Technician Education Foundation (NATEF) model for Maintenance and Light Repair. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certified, this program is designed to graduate entry-level technicians with a broad skill set, a solid foundation in electrical/electronics, and a general understanding of all automotive systems. Responsibilities Instructional Support & Mentorship Assist the Lead Instructor in delivering lessons on engine repair, electrical systems, brake systems, and diagnostics. Provide one-on-one or small-group coaching to students during hands-on shop projects. Demonstrate the proper use of specialized tools, including scan tools, lifts, and tire changers. Shop Management & Safety Enforce strict OSHA and shop safety protocols (eye protection, fluid disposal, lift safety). Maintain, calibrate, and repair shop equipment and hand tools. Manage the inventory of parts, consumables (oil, shop towels, etc.), and student tool kits. Student Assessment Monitor student progress on "live work" or lab vehicles. Assist in grading practical skills assessments and preparing students for ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) entry-level exams. Model professional workplace habits, including punctuality, communication, and cleanliness. Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma/GED required; Associate degree in Automotive Tech preferred. 2+ years of professional experience in an automotive repair setting. NYS Teaching Assistant certification (or ability to become certified) required at time of hire. Preferred candidates will have experience in an automotive related industry. Proficiency in modern vehicle diagnostics, EV/Hybrid basics, and shop management software. Patience, clear communication, and a genuine interest in youth development.
