The Port Chester Rye Union Free School District anticipates that the following stipend position will be available for the 2026-2027 school year. High School Marching Band Director Position Summary: The High School Marching Band Director is responsible for coordinating, organizing, and administering a comprehensive Marching Band program, including Color Guard, that provides meaningful musical, performance, and leadership experiences for Port Chester High School instrumental music students. The Director oversees all musical, instructional, operational, and administrative aspects of the program in accordance with School District policies. Qualifications: Certification in Music Education or related field (preferred). Experience working with high school marching band, color guard, or drumline programs. Strong instructional, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Ability to manage budgets, schedules, staff, and large student groups. Primary Responsibilities: Program Leadership & Instruction Coordinate, organize, and administer all aspects of the Marching Band and Color Guard programs. Design all marching band performances, including musical and visual concepts. Select all music to be performed during the marching band season and submit selections to the Supervisor of Fine and Performing Arts by April 20, 2026. Select all drills to be performed during the marching band season and submit drill designs by April 20, 2026. Conduct tryouts for drum majors and any special performance units. Supervise and direct all rehearsals, practices, and performances of the marching band. Rehearsals, Band Camp & Schedule Collaborate with the Supervisor of Fine and Performing Arts, the marching band, and the color guard rehearsal and performance schedule, including summer rehearsals. Conduct and organize summer rehearsals on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00–9:00 PM beginning after July 4 and continuing through the start of the season; the Director must be present and in person at all practices. All planning and organization of summer Band Camp needs to be submitted to the Supervisor of Fine and Performing Arts and High School Principal by May 15, 2026. Submit a complete performance schedule and bus departure schedule to the High School Principal and Supervisor of Fine and Performing Arts by April 20, 2026. Staffing & Supervision Make recommendations for the hiring of marching band assistants. Direct, supervise, and coordinate the work of all marching band assistants and ensure they receive full district approval. Submit all staffing recommendations to the Superintendent’s Office by May 15, 2026. Supervise marching band staff, volunteers, and students during all assigned activities. Student Management & Eligibility Provide the High School Principal and Supervisor of Fine and Performing Arts with an accurate roster of marching band members for eligibility purposes by June 1. Follow and enforce district guidelines regarding student eligibility for extracurricular activities. Equipment, Inventory & Facilities Maintain an accurate inventory of all marching band equipment and uniforms, including instruments, music, uniforms, flags, rifles, batons, and related materials. Oversee the maintenance, repair, overhaul, and proper storage of all marching band equipment. Arrange for the use of facilities and practice fields through coordination with the Supervisor of Fine and Performing Arts, Director of Athletics, Building Principal, and the district scheduling system. Travel & Events Plan, supervise, and administer overnight music festival tours in accordance with School District policy. Assist the marching band organization in preparing for competitions and fundraising events. Budget & Financial Oversight Meet regularly with the Supervisor of Fine and Performing Arts and the Music Department Co-Chair to plan expenditures and proposed spending. Keep accurate records of all receipts, deposits, and expenditures. Submit a 2026-27 Budget to the Building Principal and Supervisor of Fine and Performing Arts by April 20, 2026 Prepare requisitions for inclusion in the Music Department annual budget following district procedures. Communication & Community Relations Communicate effectively with all stakeholders, including students, parents, administrators, custodians, band boosters, and community members. Provide weekly written updates to the Supervisor of Fine and Performing Arts addressing program highlights (“Glows”), areas for growth (“Grows”), needs, and upcoming performances. Serve as an advisor to the Marching Band Booster Organization. Act as liaison between the Marching Band Booster Organization and school administration. Collaborate with the Supervisor of Fine and Performing Arts to prepare news media releases related to performances and achievements. Maintain and oversee any marching band-related websites and/or social media platforms. Professional Collaboration Communicate regularly with the Supervisor of Fine and Performing Arts and the Building Principal regarding all aspects of the marching band program. Ensure all marching band activities align with School District policies and procedures.
