DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:Supervises the transportation system of a school district including recruitment, training and assigning of School Bus Drivers, scheduling of runs, ensuring that all vehicles and equipment meet state requirements and are inspected, serviced and repaired properly. May operate a school bus as needed. The work is performed under the general supervision of a member of the School District administrative staff. Direct Supervision is exercised over School Bus Drivers and other personnel. Does related work as required.TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:Prepares bus routes and schedules and approves changes;Determines routes, length of routes and stops to be made;Assigns or assists in assigning drivers to supplement and extra drive runs;Prepares school bus route information for dissemination to the schools, school bus drivers and public;Enforces local board policy, state laws and regulations which govern/pertain to school bus drivers and school bus operations;Contacts and assigns substitute drivers and aides;Manages time records for payroll purposes;Monitors attendance of school bus drivers and the timeliness of their operations. Notifies schools of expected late buses;May act as intermediary between students, parents and School Bus Drivers;Interviews driver applicants, checks references and makes recommendations regarding employment;Trains new drivers and assists in obtaining CDL license with proper endorsements, and ensures that drivers receive ongoing training as required;Ensures that proper driver certifications are maintained as required by various government agencies;Initiates disciplinary action when required;Prepares all State transportation reports and maps of bus routes;Maintains a variety of records such as daily record of mileage, number of pupils carried, number of stops made on each route and accident reports;May assist in preparation of transportation budget;Receives and refers complaints or questions concerning transportation services;May assist in resolving student disciplinary problems on school buses in collaboration with school administration;Responds to parent and public concerns/complaints related to school bus drivers, bus routing, scheduling and operations;Ensures, where applicable, that school transportation operations conform with State laws and regulations;Prepares a variety of records and reports related to work;May operate a school bus on an as needed basis;Performs other Transportation Department duties as assigned.FULL PERFORMANCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:Good knowledge of school district transportation methods and operations; Good knowledge of driving skills and the operation of buses; thorough knowledge of safety procedures and techniques necessary for the safe operation of a school bus; good knowledge of the geography of the District; good knowledge of safety procedures and traffic laws and motor vehicle regulations applicable to school bus operation; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; ability to follow written and oral instructions; ability to keep and maintain records and reports; ability to get along well with others including the public; ability to operate a school bus.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:High School Diploma or equivalent. Three years of experience in the operation of large multi-passenger vehicles or its part-time equivalent; Possession of a valid appropriate level NYS Motor Vehicle Operator’s License. Candidates must be at least 21 years of age.NOTE: If the position involves examination of School Bus Drivers in accordance with Section 6.16 of the Regulation of the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles and Article 19A of the Vehicle and Traffic Law, candidates must possess certification as an Examiner issues by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles at time of appointment.Candidates must satisfy the requirements for School Bus Driver set forth in the Rules and Regulations of the New York State Commissioner of Education.*Salary commensurate with education and experience
