Hours: Part Time - 12-15 hrs/weekJOB SUMMARYJCC Mid-Westchester is seeking a maker and educator in the arts, crafts, and technology space. The Makerspace Educator will teach enrichment courses for pre-school and elementary-school students, as well as lead family tinkering and open maker events. The Educator will utilize and build on our current STEAM curriculum, as well as collaborate with colleagues to create new courses and activities, and ensure programming is relevant and effective. The Makerspace Educator reports to the Senior Director of Youth Programs at JCC of Mid Westchester.The Makerspace Educator serves the JCCMW’s and Friedland Makerspace missions to serve as a multi-generational cultural center for all.ABOUT THE JCC MID-WESTCHESTER AND FRIEDLAND MAKERSPACEJCC Mid-Westchester is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching the community by providing art, cultural, social, educational, and recreational/fitness programs, human services, and Jewish identity-building opportunities to all people regardless of age, background, religion, gender identity, or sexual orientation.We support our community by offering outstanding human services, and educational, cultural, and recreational programs within and beyond our walls. This space allows students to explore various technologies while cultivating computational reasoning and critical thinking.The responsibilities include supervising students, coordinating partnerships and creating and organizing existing curriculum.KEY RESPONSIBILITIESThe Makerspace Educator responsibilities include:Organize & teach STEAM-related workshops and courses for children, with a focus on hands-on learning and project-based activities.Build STEAM and Makerspace courses and programs.Oversee the daily operations of the Makerspace, ensuring it is well-stocked and maintained for use as well as develop events and record attendance and outcomes.Support new initiatives in the MakerspaceConsult on operating procedures and purchases for materials and upgrades to equipment to meet needs in the community.SKILLS/REQUIREMENTSExcellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral)Experience with STEAM and maker education and/or programming.Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office) and a willingness to learn new database platformsStrong organizational multitasking skills, as well as close attention to detail necessary.Be able to work evenings and weekendsMust be an outgoing self-starter and possess the ability to work efficiently, with discretion, tact, and flexibility, as part of a team.EDUCATION2+ years of experience teaching project-based learning or a bachelor’s degree in educationSample Pre-School and Grade School Children Programs:These could be 6-12 week courses after school, 3:30pm or on a weekend morning/afternoon - 1-1.5 hrs per classIntro to LEGO EngineeringScience of SlimeLight “bugs”Stop Motion DesignExploring Video Game DesignBasic CodingBasic Digital Media/Graphic DesignDigital Storytelling with ScratchPhysical Requirements The physical demands that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job include movement within an office/classroom environment. The role requires the ability to write by hand and use a keyboard to perform general office functions. Also requires the ability to communicate by speech and hearing continuously. Visual acuity is needed for detailed work, and computer use.
