The Reading Specialist will assume professional responsibility to interpret information from both formal and informal assessments for planning instruction. They will use knowledge of language development, the reading process, and the components of reading performance to assess and instruct. The Reading Specialist will plan instructional programs that include: read aloud, sustained independent/shared reading, writing, oral and written response, and explicit instruction. The components of the plan will also include strategies for comprehension such as; phonological awareness, decoding/word recognition and vocabulary development, fluency development, study strategies and motivation. The program will be for assigned students or to provide support for other students and teachers who work with them. They will identify high interest appropriate texts and materials to match students' strengths and needs to promote knowledge, independence, and motivation. They will also introduce students to a wide variety of children's literature at various levels and teach them how to select and use books at different levels for different tasks with a focus on motivation and developing lifelong readers.QUALIFICATIONS: The Reading Specialist shall:Hold a New York instructional certificate (Preferably Literacy & Special Education / Students with disabilities)Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of teaching reading, child growth and development, effective instructional practices K-12.Be trained in research/evidence based reading programs commonly used for students with disabilities or reading specific disabilities i.e. Orton-Gillingham, Wilson Reading System, Fundations, Lindamood-Bell etc.Continuously monitor progress of students receiving intervention services in order to adjust instructional practice and student grouping.Assess the language acquisition and reading strengths and needs of students through informal and formal measures and convey that information to classroom teachers, parents, and specialized personnel such as special educators or speech teachers in order to provide an effective reading program.Monitor the reading growth of lower achieving students using formal and informal measures and communicate with parents in regards to their child's reading progress.Provide support to the team, setting goals and planning interventions for students struggling with academic and/or behavioral issues; monitor students' progress toward goals through formal and informal assessments and observations; assist teachers in implementing interventions.Support the proctoring of state examinations for students with testing accommodations (504s and IEPs).Identify needs and make recommendations for appropriate reading and writing material for the school and students, including the use of internet resources for literacy intervention; consult frequently with classroom teachers on matters relating to reading instruction and provide them with additional strategies/materials.Identify areas for further instructional development of teachers in reading instruction.Plan for and execute professional development of reading instruction in areas of need for faculty (i.e. Norming Literacy Assessments, Guided Reading, Vocabulary and Phonics Instruction, Internet Reading Resources).Conduct classroom observations of the reading period and provide feedback to teachers on a quarterly basis.Communicate and collaborate with classroom teachers regarding alignment between classroom instruction and intervention.Mentor teachers on the implementation of systems using data to drive instruction and develop high quality reading data collection systemsCollaborate with administration in assessing and choosing educational resources to meet student-learning needs.Provide support to the team, setting goals and planning interventions for students struggling with academic and/or behavioral issues; monitor students' progress toward goals through formal and informal assessments and observations; assist teachers in implementing interventions.Job Types: Full-time, Temporary
