Reporting to: Chief Custodian Job Description The custodian plays an essential role in maintaining the cleanliness, safety and functionality of school facilities, ensuring the school runs smoothly. In addition, to regular building maintenance functions, the school custodian provides direct support to classroom teachers and office staff in set up and maintenance of furniture and equipment. The custodian will uphold the mission and values established by the school. The custodian position is designated as essential personnel during inclement/hazardous weather and other emergencies. This position's job description is intended to be a partial list of all responsibilities, duties or skills required for the job and is subject to review and change at any time, with or without notice, according to the maintenance department’s needs. Responsibilities & duties (including, but not limited to): -Clean classrooms, restrooms, hallways, multipurpose rooms, offices, and all interior rooms during the day -Floor care including mopping, stripping and waxing -Daily trash removal and cleaning of all receptacles -Set up and cleans dining area before, between, and during breakfast and/or lunch periods -Respond to emergency cleanups during the day, such as clogged drains and spills -Perform routine maintenance, including painting, replacing lights, drywall (sheet-rock), plastering, and replacement/installation of floor tiles -Perform routine grounds-keeping duties, including picking up litter, weeding, mowing the lawn, maintenance of sidewalk areas, salting of sidewalk and snow removal during inclement weather -Sets up and arranges furniture for assemblies, meetings, and special events -Secure, protect, and ensure the proper usage and maintenance of all custodial equipment -Assist with shipping and receiving packages, parcels, and large items -Light moving, plumbing and carpentry -Move furniture or equipment within buildings (ES/MS campus and HS) as required for various activities -Keep building and premises, including sidewalks, neat and clean at all times -Open and close facilities and provide access to classrooms or offices during the normal school week, after hours, and occasionally weekends as directed -Perform walk-throughs of the facility during the day to ensure the building and the outer perimeters are clean and safe; ensure all bathrooms are clean and stocked with toiletries (toilet paper and soap) at all times -Must report to work for removal or plow snow from school grounds during snow-days outside work schedule. -Perform other related duties as required and assigned -Demonstrate knowledge of, and support of the school’s mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of ethical behavior. Academic qualifications (including, but not limited to): -High School Diploma required Work experience & skills: -Prior custodial experience required -Familiarity with the use of maintenance equipment including ride behind floor cleaner, snow blower, hand power tools -Knowledge of safe and efficient use of cleaning materials, chemicals, tools and equipment -Ability to work independently -Ability to maintain simple records -Ability and willingness to meet the physical requirements necessary to perform the required duties, including ability to lift, carry, push, pull and move heavy objects regularly. -Ability to interact appropriately with children of different ages -Ability to communicate on a mature professional level - This position is to work in a school. You MUST have a clean record to get fingerprint clearance from the Department of Education. Working Environment & Equipment Used: Equipment used: buffing machine, floor stripping machine, ride-behind floor cleaner machine and carpet cleaner machine. The job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting (50 pounds maximum), carrying, pushing, and or pulling; some climbing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; and significant reaching, handling, speaking, writing, hearing, and fine dexterity; frequent standing, walking, and sitting.
