Salary: Based on ExperiencePosition OverviewThe Charter School of Educational Excellence Health and Physical Education Teacher will understand and promote the school’s mission, vision, objectives and policies both within and outside the immediate school community. The teacher will assume professional responsibility for providing learning experiences in comprehensive health and physical education and supervision of students in a supportive and positive climate that develops in each student the skills, attitudes, and knowledge using approved curricula, materials, and directives of the school. Achieving excellence requires that the Health and Physical Education Teacher work collaboratively with other members of the school staff and with parents.Responsibilities & duties (including, but not limited to)Fitness Instruction -Consistently ensure excellence in fitness instructionEffectively research and design engaging and rigorous curricula for fitness for all studentsAppropriately align learning activities and student tasks with students’ cognitive, emotional and physical developmentFitness Integration –Provide opportunities for students to demonstrate their success in fitness to peers and family membersIntegrate literacy (e.g., labelling, responding to fitness in writing) and math (e.g., counting, patters) into fitness instructionHealth Instruction-Plan and implement instruction to ensure that all students comprehend health and physical education, specifically health promotion and disease prevention concepts and health-enhancing behaviors;Health-enhancing personal, interpersonal, and life skills; Effects of the use and abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs;Biological, social, cultural, and psychological aspects of human sexuality and family life;Movement concepts and skills for life-long physical activities; and Health-related fitness concepts.Plan and implement instruction to develop career planning and workplace readiness skills;Use technology, information, and other tools;Use critical thinking, decision-making, and problem solving skills;Demonstrate self-management skills; and apply safety standards.Student Assessment –Measure student achievement and progress towards learning objectives using the school’s formative and summative assessment toolsProvide ongoing and timely feedback to students on their progress towards meeting expectations and achieving goalsConducts ongoing assessments of student growth and progress in physical educational activities, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student’s needs, including students with special needsUse student data to reflect on effectiveness of lessons and student achievement progress in order to improve instruction and personal practiceLearning Environment –Create, and manage a responsive learning environment that enables students to feel safe, to be creative, and to develop to their full potentialEnsure the safety of students in physical education activities by providing a comprehensive program in safety instruction, injury prevention and management, and physical conditioning prior to activity. Inspect facilities, grounds, and equipment regularly, and report immediately any irregularities. Provide appropriate supervision to prevent injury.Establish, model, practice and reinforce age-appropriate rules and discipline using school approved procedures; create and consistently use individual behavioral management plans as neededStudent and Extracurricular Activities –Organize and supervise approved field trips to enhance classroom learning.Provide opportunities and supervise activities in order for students to demonstrate individually and in ensembles or large groups the skills and talents developed in the music programParticipate in school physical education and health education activities, including special and after school programsStudent Support & School Culture –Communicate effectively and maintain strong relationships with students, families, colleagues and administratorsOversee and assist with student arrival / dismissalWork closely with all members of school community modelling citizenship, collaboration and support of one anotherOther tasks as assigned by the AdministrationAcademic & certification qualificationsBachelor’s Degree required,Master’s Degree preferredNY State Health/Physical Education Teacher CertificationHold and maintain CPR certification and first aid certification Work experience, Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesMinimum of 2 years of urban teaching experience required with a record of high student achievementExperience working with at-risk student population in some capacity preferredWorking knowledge and comfort level with instructional technologyKnowledge of physiology, health and nutrition, biology and biological functions, anatomy, hygiene exercise to promote physical and mental well-beingStrong written, grammatical, presentation, and verbal communication skillsStrong analytical and problem-solving skills required to develop rubrics, examine data and metrics that will enhance student knowledge and promote performance of superior work productsProven ability to work collaboratively and flexibly with a diverse team of teachers and administratorsKnowledge of childhood development and demonstrated experience with executing planned lessons to meet the differential needs of each childPersonal qualities & behavioural traitsPassionately dedicated to school’s missionDriven educator with an unrelenting focus on organization along with a high level of student and school-wide performance in achieving/exceeding New York standardsChampions change, supports school leader in trying to apply new ideas and methods; actively motivates and encourages others to adapt to changeDemonstrates persistence in overcoming and removing obstacles that impact student achievementDevelops and maintains positive communications and working relationships with students, parents, and co-workers by being collaborative and maintaining a pleasant work attitudeOpenness to feedback and willing to take responsibility for student successWorking knowledge of the charter school movement and cultureCompensationA competitive compensation package including base salary and complete benefits is available.Applying & selection processAfter submitting your cover letter, resume and salary requirements, CSEE will review your materials.
