The Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES is accepting applications for a machinist to teach the machining component in our Advanced Manufacturing Program within the Career and Technical Education Program. The successful candidate will be co-teaching the class with our welding instructor. Together, both instructors will provide high school students an in-depth training into the machining and welding careers. The ideal candidate should have experience as a general machinist, a CNC machine operator, CNC programmer, a tool and die maker, or other related occupation. He/she must be eager to share his or her knowledge with the next generation of machinists, be a wholesome role model for students, and be eligible to earn the NYS Career and Technical teacher certification. Obtaining a vocational teaching certificate in Career and Technical Education is different from a general education teacher certificate. A machinist can earn their certification over a five-year period through one of two different pathways. Requirements include a minimum of two to four years of trade work experience, passing an industry accepted CTE content exam, or have an apprenticeship or other trade credential. Other requirements include some attending various workshops on school violence and child abuse, and obtaining fingerprint clearance. BOCES Career and Technical Education programs prepare students from nine area school districts for today’s workplace. First year students focus on basic theory and skill for both machining and welding. Second year students get to choose either machining or welding and build on their first-year skills. Machining students will expand into CNC setup and operation, CNC programming both manually and using Mastercam software. Internships in local industries for both juniors and seniors is also an option for qualified students. This is a full-time, 10-month position that follows the school calendar year.
