Director of Special Education (Programs) *AnticipatedDUTIES: The Director of Special Education (Programs) is directly responsible to the Superintendent of Schools for the development, implementation, maintenance and evaluation of the School District’s program of Special Educational Services, including special education and developmental kindergarten, and other areas of general administration as assigned by the Superintendent. PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES:The director is primarily responsible for all operations in special education, and instructional programs for students with special needs, and supervises special education staff and MTSS. Provides leadership and direction in special education to ensure fair and equitable treatment of students, faculty, staff, and families.Works collaboratively with building principals to promote the least restrictive environment and inclusive settings.Communicates with staff, administrators and parents as needed to facilitate program goals.Assigns staff as required to meet program needs. Oversees the District’s compliance with NYS and Federal guidelines in all areas of special education.Maintains accurate records, develops planning documents, establish written procedures, and submit reports for the area of Special Education Services.Directs the program of District students’ screening and establishes appropriate criteria for student identification and placement in special programs.Coordinates the development of new programs and the delivery of established services in the area of special programs.Establishes, reviews and maintains specific program procedures and standards.Leads all special education CSE committees.Develops and maintains a system of program evaluation.Provides appropriate program status reports on a regular and timely basis to the Superintendent.Maintains current knowledge of policies, procedures and regulations concerning students with disabilities.Coordinates the District’s Medicaid documentation and billing system.Develops and administers appropriate budgets. Provides appropriate data to meet requirements for special apportionment funding.Assists in the recruitment, application, and selection process for special education staff.Evaluates appropriate staff, including clerical, team leaders, and non-tenures social workers, special education teachers, psychologists and speech therapists. Any other administrative and supervisory duties as assigned by the Superintendent. QUALIFICATIONS:Applicants must have prior teaching experience and appropriate NYS School District Leadership certification. Experience as a previous school district leader is strongly preferred. Thorough knowledge and understanding of Special Education Law and N.Y. S. Commissioner’s Regulations.Superior communication skills.Desire and ability to work as part of a collaborative team and ability to relate well to staff, students, and members of the community.APPLICATION:Application Deadline: June 9, 2022, or as soon as a qualified candidate is selected.
