Western Suffolk BOCES anticipates an opening for a part-time Adaptive Equipment Carpenter for our Special Education Division. Western Suffolk County locations. The Adaptive Carpenter designs, fabricates, repairs, and modifies adaptive furniture and equipment to support the individualized needs of students with physical and functional limitations. This role works closely with the Chief Occupational and Physical Therapist, staff Occupational and Physical Therapists, and other educational professionals to ensure all adaptive devices promote safety, independence, and accessibility. The Adaptive Carpenter also maintains a functional workshop, manages supplies and equipment, and ensures all work meets safety and quality standards. Responsibilities Include: Adaptive Fabrication & Repair Based on therapist recommendations and student assessments, modify and repair adaptive furniture and equipment, including chairs, desks, positioning devices, and mobility aids. Reinforce and adjust existing classroom furniture to meet student-specific postural or accessibility needs. Collaboration & Consultation Collaborate with Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, and educators to determine appropriate design specifications based on therapeutic goals and safety requirements. Communicate effectively with therapists to schedule installations and repairs. Assist staff in understanding proper use and care of equipment. Workshop & Inventory Management Maintain a safe, organized, and fully functional workshop, including tools, machinery, and workspaces. Order and manage materials, hardware, adaptive components, and specialty supplies. Track inventory and ensure adequate stock to support ongoing and urgent fabrication needs. Safety & Compliance Ensure all constructed or modified equipment meets safety standards. Follow industry best practices for carpentry, fabrication, and adaptive technology use. Maintain accurate documentation of work orders, equipment builds, and repairs. Other duties as assigned Submit cover letter and resume to apply.
