TITLE: Itinerant Teacher – Farm to School (Elementary) Certified PositionPart-Time .8 FTE (10-month) Temporary Affiliation: Teachers’ Association 1 Position, 2-Year Grant Location: TST BOCES J-BuildingRegional School Success Newfield & Trumansburg DistrictsDESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: This educator will be essential for connecting the work of the cafeteria/culinary programming to a wide variety of student-centered environmental educational programs. The Farm to School Itinerant Teacher will work with a variety of community partners to increase connection to and involvement with school gardening programs, local food pantries, wellness committees, and project-based, place-based, and environmentally friendly STEAM-based learning opportunities.TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: Co-create experiences for our youngest students to investigate the intersections between food justice and social justice through creating a unit(s) of study focused on food in their community (who has it, who doesn’t, and why). Work with classroom and support teachers to develop and support a food-based curriculum; Collaborate with faculty and staff and students to improve & maintain on-campus gardens while elevating understanding and practices focused on the intersection of food and Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) organized around instructional pathways that include agriculture/foodways and entrepreneurship. Coordinate activities between school food-based entities, i.e., gardening club, wellness committee, STEAM Team, and community-based food entities, including our local farmers market, the harvest project, local farmers, etc. Work within the community to develop partnerships (internships, mentorships, field trips, professional development opportunities, etc.) with local farmers, vendors, and the school cafeteria. Work with faculty, staff, and students to improve & maintain on-campus gardens, including possibly overseeing youth employees & community volunteers and increasing participation in the school nutrition program. Develop a Farm to School discovery trail in coordination with local businesses for each school/district. Establish and/or support a larger farm-to-school committee, which might include: Coordinate Adopt-a-Crop/Seed-to-Salad programs, and developing a Farm to School discovery trail in coordination with local businesses for each school/district. Pursue grant opportunities to help fund our work. Other duties as assigned.QUALIFICATIONS:Must possess NYS Elementary Education (Pre-K-6 grade) certification. Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and professional experiences in agriculture, food, and/or permaculture, community gardening, home economics, and culinary careers are encouraged to apply.START DATE: September 1, 2022SALARY: $50,000.00 (2022-2023 base salary, prorated to percent of time working), plus additional salary credit for previous teaching experience per NYSED, Master’s Degree and Grad Credits.
