STORY PLACE PRESCHOOL, INC. JOB DESCRIPTION: SPECIAL EDUCATION CLASSROOM TEACHER Title: Special Education Classroom Teacher Location: Story Place Preschool, Inc. Person Responsible To: Preschool Leader, Story Place Preschool, Inc. Number of Staff Supervised: Teacher Assistant, Teacher Aide, 1:1 Aide Education and/or Experience Prerequisites: Master’s Degree in Special Education or related field from an accredited college; Permanent Certification (or working towards Permanent Certification) in the field of Special Education; NYS Teacher Certification B-2; experience working with children. I. Basic Function: Responsible for the overall management and supervision of a classroom and classroom staff (teacher aide and teacher assistant). Responsible for the planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating all aspects of the educational program received by the children in the classroom. Responsible for coordinating the services and supports provided by other staff external to the classroom. II. Responsibilities: 1. Develop and update the IEP/IFSP for each child in the classroom. 2. As a member of a multidisciplinary team, assess the developmental levels and other needs of children evaluated for programming or children that are in the classroom. 3. Work with other members of the multidisciplinary team to develop IEP's/IFSP’s for each child in the classroom. 4. Oversee the development and documentation of weekly and daily lesson plans necessary to implement the IEP’s/IFSP’s for each child in the classroom. 5. Supervise the development of plans to carry out IEP’s/IFSP’s for each child in the classroom. 6. Conduct weekly team planning meetings to plan lessons and activities to meet children's needs as per their IEP’s/IFSP’s 7. Support the integration of the therapists into the classroom, as the children's needs dictate. 8. Oversee and work with each child in carrying out of daily schedules and plans for each child (including integrated peers) in the classroom. 9. Facilitate the development of an effective classroom team (including therapists) to carry out IEP’s/IFSP’s and ongoing lesson plans. 10. Supervise teacher assistant and teacher aide in working with small groups or entire of children in the classroom. 11. Lead small and large groups of children in instructional activities. 12. Ensure that children in the classroom are assisted by the teacher aids and teacher assistant under your supervision, in meeting their daily living activities. 13. Assist children in meeting their daily needs - in unloading from the bus, taking their outdoor clothing off, toileting, getting ready for snacks or lunch, eating snacks or lunch, going outdoors, getting ready to go home, and getting on the bus. 14. Assist children in participating in all classroom activities. 15. Oversee the maintaining of the classroom area, equipment, and supplies on a daily basis to ensure a well organized, safe and clean classroom environment. 16. Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment and makes request for needed supplies and equipment to the program director. 17. Maintain an adequate supply of groceries for daily snacks following nutritional and purchasing guidelines. 18. With other classroom staff, ready classroom area, equipment and supplies for use during the day. 19. Assist in maintaining general classroom upkeep, cleanliness and lunch or snack tasks. 20. Supervise teacher aide and teacher assistant in identifying and carrying out classroom maintenance and safety concerns 21. Ensure that appropriate record keeping systems are in place and all documentation requirements are met by following all prescribed policies and procedures, 22. Supervise the documentation activity of the teacher aide and teacher assistant 23. Monitor that IEP/IFSP files and other classroom memos or reports are recorded on a daily or weekly basis. 24. Write all lesson plans and daily reports, initial intake and progress reports, and yearly reviews within appropriate time frames. 25. Maintain a communication system with all internal people, external groups and individuals who impact the educational development of the child, as described in the policies and procedures manual. 26. Conduct and facilitate all daily classroom and team meetings to problem solve, modify lesson plans and activities, and/or develop strategies to meet each child's needs. 27. Keep all support personnel informed of classroom or team meetings when an individual child with whom they work is going to be discussed. 28. Participate in regular school staff meetings and in-services to require routine information updates and to improve the specific and general effectiveness of Story Place Preschool, Inc. 29. Communicate with teacher aide and teacher assistant about carrying out the IEP/IFSP for each child in the classroom. 30. Communicate with all other support staff about carrying out the IEP/IFSP for each child in the classroom. 31. Participate in all reviews of major health and educational issues and update meetings for each child in the classroom. 32. Work collaboratively with parents of the children in the classroom to address positively the ongoing development and education of their child by sending information daily with the child or communication with the parent (via telephone or home visits). 33. Meet with parents to listen for concerns and desires related to their child's educational and programming needs. 34. Work along with the Family Services Coordinator (when appropriate) to address effectively parents' concerns and questions about their child's programming needs. 35. Actively support parents through making home visits on an as needed basis and/or engaging in other supportive activities. 36. Train and orient all staff in classroom to all aspects of the classroom, their program responsibilities and Story Place Preschool, Inc. 37. Undertake initial assessment and annual performance evaluations of teacher aides and teacher assistants. 38. Provide input to the occupational therapist and physical therapist on the classroom performance of the occupational and physical therapist assistants. 39. Ensure the provision of off-site training or provide in-service training to classroom staff on an as needed basis. 40. Participate in county designated Intake and Screening Processes. 41. Communicate with school district representatives on an as needed basis. 42. Attend CSE and CPSE meetings to help develop a smooth transition for children who are moving from Story Place Preschool Inc. to other schools. 43. In consultation with the program director, report suspected instances of child abuse or neglect to appropriate authorities. 44. Attend parent support meetings on an as needed basis. 45. Maintaining professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establish personal networks; participate in relevant in-services and conferences. 46. Provide special education instruction to children in settings as needed. 47. Assist administrative staff in planning for long-range development of Story Place Preschool, Inc. and yearly program operations. 48. Make independent decisions and handle emergency situations within the program in the absence of other administrative staff. 49. Provide assistance to the Preschool Leader as requested. 50. Adheres to policies and procedures established by Story Place Preschool, Inc. in the Employee Handbook.
