Special Education Teacher assumes primary responsibility for the day to day classroom academic program and classroom management for his/her students. Duties & Responsibilities:Implement original Individualized Education Program (IEP) and prepare subsequent IEPs and Progress Reports with input from the classroom staff and clinical staff needed for Requested Reviews and Annual ReviewsDevelop instructional material and activities addressing monthly themes and implement then in a developmentally appropriate manner. Plan and implement individual and group activities for children.Meet with teacher assistants, clinical staff and administrators in team meetings to plan for the academic and behavioral progress of individual children.Collaborate with clinical staff to design intervention strategies for children in crisis in order to address significant social/emotional behaviors of individual childrenMaintain open and frequent communication with parents and reach out to parents who are reluctant to come to the school.Participates in in-service trainings, faculty meetings, parent-teacher meetings, and school events.Maintains the order and cleanliness of the classroom environmentOrders classroom materialsDirects arrival and dismissal of children to and from busSupervises dismissal of non-bussed childrenEducation & Experience:New York State Certification - Children with Disabilities (Birth-Grade 2) Initial or Professional Certificate New York State Certification - Special Education Teacher Permanent Certificate New York State Certification - Early Childhood Education (Birth-Grade 2) Initial or Professional Certificate. Must be on a study plan to obtain New York State Certification in Special EducationBA/BS in related field - will be on a study plan to obtain New York State Teacher CertificationBilingual (English/Spanish) preferredExperience with children with autism, severely language impaired and behavior management issues.Physical Requirements:Able to lift a child weighing 40 poundsAble to provide "hands-on" intervention if necessaryWhile performing the duties for this job, the employee is required to communicate clearly and effectively. The employee is required to stand; use mobility and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit and stoop, kneel or crouch.The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
