ACADEMIC HEAD of ENGLISH and SOCIAL STUDIESBroad FunctionUnder the overall supervision of the Superintendent, the Academic Head of English and Social Studies is responsible for the maintenance and refinement of departmental curricula for grades six through twelve, the professional development of the teachers within the department, and the academic well-being of the students within the discipline.Required and Preferred QualificationsThe ideal candidate should be:1. Experienced in educational leadership including best practices, curriculum development, NYS Learning Standards, and assessment.2. A collaborative, creative leader who values diversity, equity, and inclusion.3. Focused on enhancing students’ academic, social, and emotional learning.4. Team-oriented with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work cooperatively with diverse groups.5. An outstanding oral and written communicator.6. Adept at using technology as an instructional tool in a variety of applications.The successful candidate must possess professional certification in either English or Social Studies, a Master’s Degree, and New York State certification as a School District Administrator, School District Leader, or School Building Leader. He/she must have public school district experience.A minimum of ten years of public school and administrative experience is preferred. The successful candidate will exhibit excellent writing, speaking, and problem-solving skills. A demonstrated ability to work productively with students, parents, staff, colleagues, community residents and the Board of Education is critical.Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe duties and responsibilities of the Academic Head of English and Social Studies include, but are not limited to: Actively facilitate the implementation of the Next Generation Learning Standards in English Language Arts and the new Social Studies framework Actively participate in the creation and implementation of professional development opportunities across the district Communicate directly with students and parents / guardians to address students’ educational needs In conjunction with the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction determine criteria for entrance into Honors and Advanced Placement courses Assist the administrative team in determining and implementing strategies for providing academic intervention services to secondary students Provide leadership for the assigning of student awards and honors, participating in ceremonies and graduation Work directly with the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction in all matters related to curriculum and program Directly responsible for the Annual Professional Performance Review process for all secondary English and Social Studies teachers Provides curricular and instructional support for English and Social Studies teachers and co-teachers of students with special needs Data collection, verification, and reporting for the purpose of improving instruction for students and identifying professional development needs of staff Data collection, verification, and reporting as required by New York State Education Department and federal Department of Education mandates Lead instructional staff through the process of data analysis for the purpose of improving instruction Analysis of program effectiveness through examination of data, including but not limited to, State Education Department assessments, Academic Intervention Services program success rates, and course pass rates Provides leadership for program development, establishing levels of satisfactory performance and implementing a system of monitoring, disseminating, and making instructional use of learning results Responsible for researching, selecting, and implementing technology to enhance instruction to students Responsible for budget development for the secondary instructional program in English Language Arts and Social Studies Directs/supervises/coordinates the district testing program, including New York State assessments, local assessments of student learning, and local end of course / end of year assessments Responsible for the course audit for advanced placement courses Coordinates substitute teachers in the district in conjunction with Capital Region BOCES Performs such additional duties as may be assigned by the SuperintendentEmployment InformationThe Academic Head for English Language Arts and Social Studies is directly responsible to the Superintendent for the proper conduct of his/her assigned duties and responsibilities.
