Director of Counseling (Probationary): Scarsdale High SchoolScarsdale High School is seeking a visionary, experienced, and collaborative leader for the position of Director of Counseling. As the Department Chair, the successful candidate will lead a dedicated team of eight school counselors in a high-achieving school of approximately 1,500 students. Primary Purpose:Under the direct supervision of the School Principal, the Director of Counseling serves as the instructional and administrative leader of the Counseling Department. The Director is responsible for the supervision and evaluation of counseling staff, the strategic development of the comprehensive developmental school counseling program, and serves as a key liaison between the department, administration, parents, and the greater community. Essential Functions: Leadership & Administration:Departmental Oversight: Serve as Chair for a department of eight school counselors; facilitate department meetings and coordinate professional development.Supervision & Evaluation: Conduct formal and informal observations and evaluations of counseling staff to ensure the highest standards of student support.Strategic Vision: Lead the design and implementation of a 9-12 counseling curriculum that addresses academic achievement, college readiness, and social-emotional wellness.College Admissions Liaison: Stay at the forefront of national college admissions trends; maintain and build relationships with university admissions offices.Program Coordination: Oversee large-scale department initiatives, including college nights, parent orientations, and student workshops.Policy Development: Assist in developing school-wide policies regarding student wellness, mental health protocols, and academic scheduling. Essential Functions: Counseling & Student Support:Direct Services: Maintain a reduced caseload of students, providing individualized academic, personal, and post-secondary counseling.Crisis Management: Lead the department's response to student crises and collaborate with the clinical team (psychologists/social workers) on complex mental health cases.Conflict Resolution: Serve as a high-level resource for resolving complex student, teacher, or parent concerns.Collaboration: Work closely with administrators to address student attendance, behavioral trends, and disciplinary matters through a supportive, counseling-based lens. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Leadership Mastery: Proven ability to mentor staff and manage the logistics of a busy high school counseling office.Communication: Exceptional public speaking and writing skills for communicating with a highly engaged parent body and faculty.Data-Informed: Ability to use student data to identify trends and improve departmental outcomes.Technical Proficiency: Mastery of school counseling software (e.g., Naviance, Scoir, Infinite Campus). Qualifications Profile:NYS Certification: Valid New York State Certification as a School Counselor required.Administrative Certification: NYS School Building Leader (SBL) or School District Leader (SDL) certification highly preferred (or commitment to obtaining such upon appointment).Education: Master's Degree in School Counseling or related field from an accredited college or university.Experience: * Extensive experience in high school counseling and the college admissions process.Previous experience in a leadership, department chair, or supervisory role is strongly preferred.Demonstrated success in implementing professional development and mental health initiatives.FLSA Status: Exempt
