High School Leave Replacement School CounselorStart date: October 21, 2024 End date: April 1, 2025 At Port Chester High School, the School Counselor will assist with the development of the master schedule, create student schedules and guide students both academically, socially and emotionally. Additionally, the School Counselor will help students develop the academic and social skills needed to succeed, personally and professionally. The School Counselor will help students overcome obstacles that may inhibit their learning and promote student success, provide preventative services, and respond to identified student needs. Individuals with familiarity or expertise with the college admissions process are strongly encouraged to apply to the position. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:Assisting students in the college application process.Developing the master schedule.Creating new student schedules for all students including students with disabilities and English Language Learners.Assist in the intake and orientation of new students. Evaluate students’ abilities and interests through aptitude assessments, interviews, and individual planning.Identifying issues that affect school performance, such as poor classroom attendance rates.Help students understand and overcome social or behavioral problems through classroom guidance lessons and counseling.Counsel individuals and small groups on the basis of student and school needs.Work with students to develop skills, such as organizational and time management abilities and effective study habits.Help students create a plan to achieve academic and career goals.Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and parents to help students succeed.Teach students and school staff about specific topics, such as social emotional learning, bullying, drug abuse, and planning for college or careers after graduation.Maintain records as required (Report Cards/Transcripts).Reporting possible cases of neglect or abuse and referring students and parents to resources outside the school for additional support.Work directly with students to provide support services.Help coordinate NYS Assessments.Communicate and collaborate with the Directors of Guidance and the Director of Special Education to facilitate the needs of students (e.g. annual reviews, changes in accommodations, diploma service needs).QUALIFICATIONS: The position requires current NYS certification as a School Counselor. The individual should have relevant experience with scheduling and working with a similar population. The ability to communicate orally and in writing is a critical qualification for this position.
