POSITION CLASS TITLE: H.V.A.C. MECHANICJURISDICTIONAL CLASS: COMPETITIVEDISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:This position exists in the city school district and involves responsibility for performance of skilled maintenance and repair activities with a variety of components of air conditioning-ventilating, heating and refrigeration systems and apparatus. This position is distinguished from other maintenance and repair positions by the specialized nature of the work in specific skill areas. When not engaged in H.V.A.C. Mechanic duties, the incumbent performs a variety of semi-skilled repair and maintenance activities in the masonry, carpentry and electrical fields. The work is performed under general supervision of the Director of Facilities with leeway allowed for exercise of independent judgement in carrying out technical details of the work. Supervision over the work of others varies based on repair and installation activities. Does related work as required.TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: Maintains and repairs air conditioning-ventilating equipment, chillers, boilers, pumps, heating equipment in various school buildings; Maintains and repairs refrigeration systems and equipment, including walk-in coolers, refrigerators, chillers and water coolers; Cleans, lubricates and otherwise services pumps, compressors and refrigeration systems;Repairs gas and electric fire heating equipment in various school buildings; Performs preventative maintenance and repair of high and low pressure steam lines, pipes and boilers and related equipment; Inspects machinery and equipment and replaces worn or broken parts; Responsible for refrigerant and gas management; Adjusts electric and electronic controls and thermostats and regulates systems operations for maximum efficiency;Estimates and requisitions materials needed for maintenance and repairs;Installs and repairs wiring, switches and controls; Keeps variety of records and reports related to the work as well as regulated gases used; Reclaims HVAC gases as required; Orders repair and replacement parts for HVAC repair and installation activities.KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:Summary of full performance level characteristics.Thorough knowledge of the operations, maintenance and repair of refrigeration systems and equipment; thorough knowledge of the operations and maintenance of building heating, air conditioning and ventilation systems; good knowledge of the principles, procedures, tools and safety precautions pertinent to the work; good knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and tools used in boiler and steam line repair and maintenance; good knowledge of the availability and costs of tools, parts and materials necessary to the trade; working knowledge of electrical wiring and electronic circuitry as they relate to heating, refrigeration, air conditioning and ventilation systems; ability to develop and implement a preventative maintenance program for large heating, air conditioning and ventilation systems; ability to work from sketches, blueprints and construction diagrams; ability to read and interpret plans, blueprints and specifications; ability to maintain simple records; mechanical aptitude.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Education, specialized background, training and experienceA) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered two year college, university or trade school with an Associate's Degree in air conditioning, refrigeration or H.V.A.C. technology, or related field and three (3) years of experience in the repair and maintenance of air conditioning-ventilating, heating and refrigeration systems equipment;orB) Five (5) years of experience in the repair and maintenance of air conditioningventilating, heating and refrigeration systems equipment;orC) An equivalent combination of experience and training as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: At time of appointment: Possession of a valid New York State Driver License, Class D or higher and possession of E.P.A Universal CFC/HCFC refrigerant processing certification and refrigerant recovery/recycle certification.*Posting will remain open until position is filled.
