GENERAL DESCRIPTION:The Physical Education teacher is responsible for providing a well rounded athletic and physical development program for all of our special needs students at the Elementary, Middle, or High School age level. The PE teacher must be able to adapt regular physical education requirements and activities to meet the individual needs of our students across various developmental levels. The PE teacher must be familiar with wellness issues and concerns as well as weight management directives from various governmental sources. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Prepare classes in Physical and Health Education according to the school's daily scheduleMaintain an inventory of physical education supplies and equipment and appropriately store and supervise supplies and equipmentKeep gym, outside PE areas, and locker room spaces in good orderProvide for the health and safety of students in a manner consistent with good practices for the profession of physical educationConduct and provide an annual evaluation of each student's performance on an approved measure of physical fitness consistent with standards set by local of federal governmentProvide an Adaptive Physical Education program tailored to each student's needsProvide instructional sessions and clinics for all sports geared to the various developmental needs of each class groupingProvide appropriate weight management activities for any student needing this assistanceEnsure that wellness activities are integrated into the physical education program that are supportive of our breakfast and lunch programProvide routine first aid when and where needed during physical education activitiesAnd all other job related duties as assigned by the Martin de Porres School administrationSUPERVISES:StudentsTeacher AssistantQUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION:NYS Permanent or Professional Certification in Physical Education / Adaptive Physical EducationMaster's Degree in Physical Education / Adaptive Physical Education or in a sport's related field or activity EXPERIENCE:Experience as a Physical Education Teacher in a special education school setting or in another type of setting where the same type of activities were held preferred. SKILLS & ABILITIES:Demonstrated ability to run a Physical Education program for special needs students at the Elementary, Middle, or High School levelDemonstrated ability to run an Adaptive Physical Education program geared to meet individual student developmental needsUnderstanding of health and personal hygiene issues for Middle School age level studentsDemonstrated ability to provide a wide range of athletic activities over a school yearDemonstrated ability to provide short term goals specific for each student as requested at annual review time by the Committee on Special EducationWillingness to develop physical education activities and possible team sports outside the normal school hours and regular school dayDemonstrated ability to assist parents and guardians in understanding the physical education needs of their children and developing ways for them to influence home activities that will enhance academic growth=====================================================================This position description contains the major responsibilities required to perform this job.
