GENERAL DESCRIPTION:The Teacher Assistant is responsible for assisting in the implementing of instructional methods and supporting each student in classroom activities that further develop the instructional program as outlined by the classroom's Special Education Teacher or Common Area Subject Teacher. The Teacher Assistant is also responsible for supervision and behavioral management of students both in classroom activities, transitioning around the school complex, at breakfast and lunch, at arrival and dismissal time. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervise homeroom students at breakfast and lunch each dayAssist in a direct way the classroom teacher in his/her preparation, implementation, evaluation and recording daily lesson plans as directed by the teacherInsure that students are always accompanied by an adult and are directly supervised as they move about the school building and school campusInsure that the classroom is left in clean and orderly condition at the end of the school dayAssess students for signs of emotional difficulties, abuse, or neglect and report these to the teacher, class social worker or school administratorActively support the teacher in addressing student behavioral needsShare particular talents and skills to enhance the student's school programParticipate in the school's professional development programAssist students in the class with medication during the school day in accordance with school policies and proceduresAssist individual students while in the classroom by moving around the room and being alert to individual student learning stylesAssist and supervise students during arrival and dismissal processesAssist in classroom coverage when directed by the school administrationAssist the classroom teacher with clerical tasks such as student homework collection and correction, report card assistance, parent contact, incident reporting.Attend and be actively involved in student progress meetings as requested and in support of the classroom teacher's effortsDevelop a supporting relationship with your students and with their parents and guardiansAnd all other job related duties as assigned by the Martin de Porres School administration QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION:NYS Teacher Assistant Certification, Level 1, 2, 3,In-Service Training at Martin de Pores SchoolHigh School DiplomaAssociate Degree (in process) EXPERIENCE:Minimum of 1 year experience working in a school or similar setting with activities involving children and/or adolescents.Minimum of 1 year experience in a foster care agency, hospital setting or a related human services agency SKILLS & ABILITIES:Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with classroom teacherDemonstrated ability to appropriately supervise students in a classroom setting and while transitioning around the school buildingDemonstrated ability to implement the instructional program as presented by the classroom teacherWillingness to be involved in a program of professional developmentDemonstrated ability to be an active and involved partner in the classroom processDemonstrated ability to work with students in your classroom especially when some students may be behaviorally challengingDemonstrated ability to assist parents and guardians in understanding the academic needs of their children and developing ways for them to influence home activities that will enhance academic growth====================================================================This position description contains the major responsibilities required to perform this job.
