RESPONSIBILITIES: Plan, prepare and deliver culturally responsive and relevant lesson plans using instructional materials that facilitate active learning and engagement while addressing student needs outlined in their individualized education programs (IEPs)Conduct ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, and modify instructional methods to fit individual student's needsCommunicate student progress and areas for growthUtilize relevant technology and instructional materials to support and differentiate instructionEstablish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with colleaguesEncourage family involvement in each student’s education, and ensure effective communication with students and familiesPromote a classroom environment that is safe, welcoming, and affirming for all students Manage instructional and supervisory responsibilities of teaching assistants and teacher aidesCommunicate effectively orally and in writing POSITION QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of appropriate New York State Special Education Teacher Certification (Special Education K-12, Special Education Permanent, SWD 7-12)Middle School teaching experience in a special class is strongly preferredBilingual (Spanish-English) preferredStrong classroom management skills, inclusive of establishing a highly supportive, structured and predictable school setting with clear and consistent expectations and a positive reinforcement systemKnowledge of high leverage special education practices and specially designed instructionExperience with IEP development - writing goals, progress monitoring and identification of modifications/accommodationsExperience with New York State Alternate Assessment (NYSAA) preferred In depth knowledge of social emotional learning (SEL) approaches and experience in implementing SEL to cultivate a classroom that is affirming and welcomingThorough knowledge of the NYS Learning StandardsDemonstrated knowledge of NYS Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Frameworks Ability to analyze data to improve instructional practice and student learning outcomesAbility to engage in self-reflection with regard to performance and professional growth; actively seeks professional learning opportunities REPORTS TO: Assistant Principal, Principal, Director of Special Education Ethnically, culturally, and linguistically diverse candidates are welcome and encouraged to apply.
