Student Empowerment Coordinator (SEC) – Overview The Katonah-Lewisboro School District is seeking a dynamic educator to serve as the Student Empowerment Coordinator (SEC) at John Jay High School. This role is central to advancing a school culture grounded in belonging, student voice, and agency, aligned with KLSD’s Vision 2030, Profile of a Learner, and 6 Pillars. The SEC works closely with students, administration, teachers, counselors, social workers, support staff, and families to support students’ academic, social, and emotional growth. The position blends leadership in student empowerment, restorative practices, and student support systems, ensuring a consistent, equitable, and proactive approach to student behavior and well-being. In addition, the SEC leads the development and coordination of a student tutoring program, creating opportunities for peer-to-peer learning, academic support, and student leadership. The SEC will also provide coordination of the assigned faculty to the tutoring center. A key component of the role is the use of data and continuous improvement practice through analyzing trends in behavior, engagement, and equity, and providing annual reports to inform school and district decision making. Katonah-Lewisboro School District Position Title: Student Empowerment Coordinator (SEC) Direct Report: Building Principal Supervises: N/A (Collaborates closely with administration, teachers, counselors, social workers, and support staff) Location: John Jay High School Position Summary: The Student Empowerment Coordinator (SEC) fosters a culture of belonging, respect, and student agency. This role supports students in their academic, social, and emotional growth while promoting leadership, restorative practices, and equity. The SEC partners with families, administration, faculty, and staff to empower every student to thrive as learners and community members aligned with the KLSD Profile of a Learner and our 6 Pillars. The SEC supports student discipline and behavior systems, ensuring consistency, and a focus on learning and restoration. The SEC also leads data collection and annual reporting to demonstrate impact on students and families, inform continuous improvement, and align with the KLSD Profile of a Learner and our 6 Pillars. In addition, the SEC oversees the development, implementation, and coordination of a student-centered tutoring program and tutoring center, engaging both trained teachers and student tutors to expand academic support, leadership opportunities, and peer-to-peer learning. Essential Roles and Responsibilities: Student Empowerment & Leadership Develop and provide direction in student leadership programs and opportunities for voice and agency. (e.g. LEAD JJ). Mentor students in conflict resolution, decision-making, and personal growth. Facilitate student empowerment workshops focused on equity, wellness, and civic engagement. Partner with student groups to build an inclusive school culture (e.g. clubs, empowerment groups, councils). Track and report student leadership participation and initiatives annually to demonstrate student voice and agency impact. Restorative Practices & Community Building Lead implementation of restorative practices in response to conflict and behavioral challenges. Facilitate restorative circles, mediation, and re-entry plans that promote learning and accountability. Collaborate with administration, teachers, counselors, social workers, and support staff to embed restorative principles in classrooms and school-wide activities. Collect and report data on restorative interventions, including completion rates and student outcomes, to measure effectiveness. Belonging Champion efforts to ensure all students feel valued, seen, and heard. Analyze behavioral data to identify patterns, address disparities, and inform proactive supports. Collaborate with psychologists, board certified behavior analysts (BCBA), counselors, social workers, and families to design individualized support plans. Provide an annual disproportionality analysis of discipline and behavior incidents by race, gender, special education status, and English learner status to monitor equity and inform schoolwide efforts. Student Support, Discipline & Well- Being Provide proactive support to students navigating academic, behavioral, or social-emotional challenges. Serve as a resource and advocate for students and families. Coordinate with faculty and staff to create intervention plans addressing student needs. Collaborate with faculty and staff to implement classroom management strategies and preventative discipline measures. Assist school administration in maintaining accurate records of disciplinary incidents and outcomes, and utilize data to inform interventions and systemic improvements. Assist administration in developing an annual Student Behavior & Discipline Report that includes incident trends, recidivism rates, restorative interventions, and family engagement data. Present findings to school leadership as needed. Assist administration in the ongoing evaluation of the school related processes. (e.g. Identify root causes of absenteeism.) Academic Empowerment: Tutoring Center Coordination The SEC will establish, coordinate, and supervise a comprehensive student-led tutoring center designed to expand equitable academic support, student leadership, and peer-to-peer learning. The SEC will also provide guidance for the faulty that are scheduled in the Tutoring Center. Program Development and Oversight Design and manage a school-based Tutoring Center that utilizes both identified trained teachers and student tutors to provide academic assistance across content areas. Develop a structured peer-tutoring program including clear expectations, operating procedures, and program goals (e.g. Stevenson High School framework). Establish systems for tutor recruitment, application, selection, training, and ongoing support. Coordinate scheduling, supervision, and daily operations of tutoring services. Training and Capacity Building Develop and implement a formal Student Tutor Training Program, including: Tutoring strategies and questioning techniques Study skills coaching Confidentiality and professionalism Culturally responsive and inclusive practices Communication skills and goal setting Session structures and progress monitoring Create clear tutoring session protocols (e.g., connect, set purpose, review resources, scaffold learning, conclude and reflect). Organize periodic professional learning for teachers who support the tutoring program. Coordination and Collaboration Partner with teachers, Curriculum Leaders and Instructional Coaches, counselors, and administrators to identify student needs and align tutoring supports with curriculum and classroom instruction. Develop referral systems to connect students to tutoring based on academic performance, teacher recommendations, or student request. Collaborate with special education and ENL staff to ensure tutoring services are accessible and supportive of diverse learners. Data Collection and Reporting Track participation, attendance, subject areas served, and student outcomes. Collect feedback from tutors, tutees, families, and teachers to guide continuous improvement. Prepare an annual Tutoring Center Impact Report summarizing: Number of students served Academic areas supported Tutor participation and training Impact on student performance and engagement Equity of access and participation trends Family and Community Engagement Build trusting relationships with families to support student success. Communicate consistently with families about student growth and school expectations. Partner with community organizations to expand resources and supports for students. Track family engagement in student discipline and restorative processes and report annually on trends in family participation and satisfaction. Data, Reporting, and Continuous Improvement Create and present an annual Coordinator of Student Empowerment Impact Report summarizing key metrics, including: Behavior and discipline trends Restorative practice outcomes Equity and disproportionality analysis Student leadership and empowerment efforts Family and community engagement Use data to identify strengths, gaps, and areas for growth, informing school improvement planning Collaborate with school leadership to adjust practices and interventions based on findings. Qualifications: Certification: Master’s Degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), or a related field (administrative certification preferred). Knowledge and Skills: Experience managing student discipline and knowledge of restorative and progressive discipline models preferred. Experience working with adolescents in educational or youth development settings. Training or experience in restorative practices, equity-focused leadership, and Social Emotional Learning preferred. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and conflict-resolution skills. Demonstrated commitment to equity, belonging, and student-centered approaches. Experience: Minimum of 5 years teaching experience with demonstrated leadership experience.
