DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This position involves considerable responsibility in supervising, evaluating, monitoring the work performed by employees of a Buildings and Grounds department and/or a Public Works department. Independent judgment is required to direct the work of assigned crews to achieve the desired result, whether new construction, renovation, cleaning or maintenance and repairs. Immediate supervision is exercised over assigned individuals. Work is supervised by and responsible to the Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds or the Commissioner of Public Works or the Director of School Operations and Facilities or the Supervisor of Buildings & Grounds. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (The following work activities are listed as examples only and in no event shall an employee be limited to only those examples listed here.) Supervises and evaluates the performance of the individuals for whom he/she is responsible;Assigns and inspects work, tasks and activities;Acts as foreperson for the individuals for whom he/she is responsible;Lays out and checks materials and labor requirements;Supervises the job as set forth in plans, specifications or as directed;Supervises and coordinates sub-contracting work;Performs work in general construction and maintenance, as needed;Purchases materials and supplies, as needed or directed. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Working knowledge of construction, maintenance and cleaning; ability to supervise and evaluate the performance of individuals to attain desired objectives; ability to give written and oral directions; ability to use materials and labor efficiently and effectively; ability to understand and follow written directions; thoroughness; dependability; tact; judgment; firmness; integrity and physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and either: 1. One (1) year of college coursework and one (1) year of experience as a supervisor, manager or foreperson; or 2. Eighteen (18) months experience in construction, maintenance or cleaning and six (6) months as a supervisor, manager or foreperson; or 3. Six (6) years of experience in construction, maintenance or cleaning. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR CHEMUNG COUNTY: Possession of a Class B Commercial Driver’s License at time of appointment. Must complete tanker endorsement within 3 months of appointment. Class B license must be maintained throughout appointment in this title
