Freeport Public Schools – Attendance TeacherLocation: Freeport High SchoolStart Date: August 27, 2025Employment Type: Full-TimePosition Overview:Freeport High School is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Attendance Teacher to lead efforts in improving student attendance and engagement. This role requires a trauma-informed, culturally responsive approach to working with students and families, and a commitment to building strong community partnerships. The ideal candidate will be a collaborative leader who can implement schoolwide strategies and provide individualized support to address barriers to attendance. Key Responsibilities Monitor and maintain accurate student attendance recordsCommunicate with parents/guardians via phone, email, and in-person meetingsVerify absences and follow up on unexcused or chronic absencesConduct home visits, including to students residing in family sheltersProvide support and connect families with community-based resources to address attendance barriersDocument outreach efforts and update school staff on attendance-related concernsFacilitate parent meetings, team discussions, and professional development sessionsLead or support the implementation of a multi-tiered, schoolwide attendance improvement strategy that includes universal prevention, early intervention, and intensive support for students with chronic absenceRegularly analyze attendance data to identify trends, student subgroups with higher absence rates, and root causes of absenteeism. Use this data to inform interventions at both the individual and systemic levelsDevelop and implement personalized attendance intervention plans for students and families, using a trauma-informed and culturally responsive approach. This includes:Conducting root cause analysis with students and familiesCoordinating wraparound servicesMonitoring progress and adjusting supports as neededActively engage families and community partners in attendance improvement efforts. This includes:Hosting attendance-focused family workshopsPartnering with local organizations, clergy, and government agenciesServing as a liaison to connect families with resourcesCollaborate with school staff to foster a positive school climate that encourages daily attendance. This includes:Developing and Promoting incentive programsSupporting classroom-level attendance messagingParticipating in schoolwide campaigns like Attendance Awareness MonthServe as a key member of the school’s attendance team, contributing to regular meetings, sharing insights, and helping coordinate Tier 2 and Tier 3 supportsQualifications:Required:Bachelor’s Degree Completion of required NYSED workshops:Child Abuse IdentificationSchool Violence PreventionDignity for All Students Act (DASA)Fingerprint clearancePreferred:Master’s Degree (Social Work, Psychologist, Guidance Counselor, Mental Health, Teaching) NYS Attendance Teacher CertificationBilingual or multilingual skills matching community languages (Highly Preferred)Experience with trauma-informed practices and strength-based outreachFamiliarity with community resources and student support systemsWork Schedule:Standard school hours with additional outreach hours before/after school or on weekends, as needed (up to 128 hours annually)Includes up to 2 hours of orientation and up to 12 hours of paid coaching/training sessions annuallyApply Today to Make a Difference in the Lives of Freeport Students!
