Elementary School Counselor General OverviewSchool counselors are vital to the mental health and the development of students, many who experience difficulties at home as well as in the classroom. The counselor helps students attain an optimum level of personal and social adjustment.Elementary School Counselor RoleThis position reports to the Director of Special Education and the Principal.The salary is based on the steps included in the teacher's bargaining unit; experience will be honored whenever possible. The counselor is expected to effectively collaborate with teachers, parents, and school leaders. . The main function of the school counselor is to improve the general well-being of the students. Job QualificationsCounseling/Guidance Certification Experience working in schools with students ranging in age from PK through sixth grade. Ability to organize tasks and manage time to meet many and varied deadlines and communicate effectively with students, parents, school administrators and other staff, including the ability to discuss topics which may be sensitive.The successful candidate will provide instruction for social-emotional learning (SEL classes).The candidate will be expected to provide counseling to small groups or individuals. He/ she will serve as a member of the School Based Intervention Team and as a resource for families to promote engagement and connection with the school district.
