Position OverviewThe East Ramapo Central School District is seeking a detail-oriented and safety-focused School Bus Route Inspector. This Civil Service position is responsible for ensuring the safety, efficiency, and compliance of school bus routes. The role involves inspecting, evaluating, and recommending improvements to routes to meet regulatory standards and the needs of students and the district. Work is performed under the supervision of a transportation supervisor or school administrator.Key Responsibilities:Conduct regular on-site inspections of bus routes, assessing road conditions, traffic patterns, and potential hazardsEvaluate the efficiency and safety of existing routes and recommend improvements as needed Work with school administrators to address transportation-related concerns from parents, students, or staff Maintain records of route inspections, safety checks, and any recommended or implemented changes Prepare and submit reports on route efficiency, safety compliance, and related matters Address and assist in resolving issues such as delays, road closures, or complaints Respond to emergencies or accidents, coordinating with appropriate authorities Collaborate with the transportation department to plan and adjust bus routes based on student population, school schedules, and geographic considerations Monitor compliance with local, state, and federal transportation regulations and district policies Conduct bus pass checks at bus stops as needed Assist in establishing bus routes and supporting bus driver training and safety programs Operate a bus when necessary Utilize route planning software to develop efficient bus schedules Perform related duties as assignedRequired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Good knowledge of laws, regulations, and safety practices for the transportation of school children Knowledge of school bus route inspection practices Familiarity with the geographic area served Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare reports Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students, parents, and administrators Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationshipsMinimum Qualifications:High school diploma or equivalency diploma Two years of experience driving a school bus with a capacity of twenty-one or more passengers Possession of a valid driver’s license at the time of application, maintained throughout employmentSpecial Requirements:Possession of a valid driver’s license required for the type and size of vehicle to be driven, verified at the time of appointment and periodically thereafter Compliance with Article 19-A, Vehicle and Traffic Law, Part 6 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles, and Section 3624 of the Education Law Incumbents with current Examiner certification may be required to conduct state-mandated driver testing (not mandatory for the position)Salary: Salary is determined according to district salary schedules and candidate experienceHow to Apply:Interested candidates should submit the following to the East Ramapo Central School District Human Resources Department or apply on OLASJobs.org:Completed district application Current resume Cover letter describing qualifications and experience Any relevant documentation or certifications
