Job Title: Special Education Teacher – Special Class 8:1:1Location: Edgemont Union Free School District, Scarsdale NYPosition Type: Full-Time ProbationaryJob Summary:Edgemont is seeking a passionate, dedicated, and compassionate Special Education Teacher to join our team for a Life Skills model program (ICAP) at the high school level. This position focuses on supporting students with significant intellectual and developmental disabilities by providing individualized instruction that promotes independence, functional skills, and social-emotional growth. As a special class teacher, you will play a vital role in helping students build the skills they need for life beyond high school, including vocational, self-care, communication, and social skills.Key Responsibilities:Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) tailored to each student’s needs, goals, and learning styles.Provide direct instruction in life skills such as self-care, community participation, functional academics, social skills, and vocational training.Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including general education teachers, specialists, and parents, to create and maintain a supportive, inclusive learning environment.Monitor and assess student progress regularly, providing feedback and adjusting instruction as needed. Data to support all areas is expected and required.Support students in developing self-advocacy and self-regulation skills to promote independence.Foster a positive, safe, and engaging classroom environment that encourages student growth and participation.Communicate regularly with families to provide updates on student progress and collaborate on strategies for success.Attend and contribute to IEP meetings, staff meetings, and professional development opportunities.Ensure compliance with state and federal special education laws and regulations.Has a background in a methodology that supports individualized instruction in woking with students with significant disabilities.Qualifications:Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or a related field (Master's preferred).Valid state teaching certification in Special Education.Experience working with students with significant disabilities in a classroom setting, particularly at the high school level, is preferred.Strong understanding of differentiated instruction and IEP development.Ability to work collaboratively in a team-based environment.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a strong commitment to student success and well-being.Patience, creativity, and the ability to adapt to a variety of learning styles and needs.
