Distinguishing Features of the Class:Provide public information services to component school districts and internal BOCES customers. This position involves planning and executing projects in the area of community relations and public relations. This is creative work requiring imagination and a demonstrated ability in developing interesting and clear presentation in various media. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Coordinator for Communication Services, with leeway for carrying out the day to day responsibilities of the position. Related work is performed as required.Typical Work Activities:-Assists in the development of annual communication/public information plans for component school districts;-Designs and writes newsletter, calendars, presentations, and other public relation materials;-Develops graphic arts materials for various media using computer-based applications;-Establishes and maintains working relationships with Chief School Officers so as to provide proactive communication and public information services;-Maintains a log of public information outcomes for school districts and BOCES;-Maintains working relationships with news media and other public individuals;-Assists with information gathering (e.g. research, data compilation, database management) associated with internal and external BOCES public information initiatives and projects;-Performs related responsibilities as assigned by the Coordinator for Communication Services.Minimum Qualifications: Either:Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor’s degree and three years of experience in public relations, community relations, journalism, or related field. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s degree and four (4) years of experience in public relations, community relations, journalism, or related field. Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma and six (6) years of experience in public relations, community relations, journalism, or related field. Note: Vacancies are filled by a certified list provided by Washington County Civil Service. Should no certified list be available, candidates appointed to this position will be serving in a provisional appointment in accordance with New York State Civil Service Law. The candidate must successfully complete a competitive examination and be eligible for appointment in accordance with Civil Service Law and the Civil Service Rules for Washington County to obtain a permanent appointment.
