The West Islip Union Free School District has an anticipated opening for an empathetic, skilled, and collaborative School Social Worker. In this role, you will promote and enhance the mission of West Islip UFSD by providing opportunities for elementary-aged children to develop self-esteem, respect for others, and the foundational knowledge, skills, and attitudes to become responsible citizens in an ever-changing world. We are seeking a dedicated clinician who understands early childhood and elementary social-emotional development and collaborates with all stakeholders to implement effective intervention strategies that foster positive school adjustment. Required Qualifications & Certifications: Valid New York State Education Department School Social Worker Certification Anticipated Dates: August 2026 to December 2026 Our next School Social Worker will inspire student success by: Providing Direct Student Services: Delivering individual and small group counseling to address early childhood/elementary mental health and behavioral concerns, while effectively managing crisis intervention. Implementing Behavioral Support: Developing and executing effective intervention strategies and positive behavioral supports to improve student behavior and enhance early academic success. Fostering Collaborative Practice: Working seamlessly within an interdisciplinary team and applying deep knowledge of the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework. Engaging Families & Community: Connecting families with appropriate community referrals and collaborating with outside agencies to secure essential resources and support. Promoting Positive School Culture: Supporting and driving building-wide Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) initiatives tailored for elementary learners. Maintaining Strong Communication: Consistently and professionally communicating with parents, teachers, and key stakeholders to support foundational student growth. Key Areas of Expertise: Compliance & Regulations: Direct experience navigating the CSE (Committee on Special Education) and 504 processes, alongside a working knowledge of McKinney-Vento (homeless education) and DASA (Dignity for All Students Act) regulations. Child Development: A proven understanding of the emotional and social development of elementary students, taking into account family, community, and cultural influences on student achievement. Multidisciplinary Advocacy: Experience collaborating across general education, special education, and administrative teams to promote a holistic approach to student well-being and success.
