Valley Central is a school district of almost 4200 students and approximately 1,000 full and part-time staff situated mainly in the Town of Montgomery, New York with its three villages of Maybrook, Montgomery and Walden. Students also come from the adjacent areas of the towns of Newburgh, Crawford, Wallkill, Hamptonburgh, and New Windsor. Our mission is to empower every member to achieve at high levels and embrace the joy of continuous learning.DIRECTOR OF SPECIAL EDUCATIONLeadership and SupervisionProvides instructional leadership for K-12 special education, ensuring access for all students in alignment with New York State learning standards, enactment of special education programs and services.Provides leadership and support for all special education staff to foster an inclusive and equitable environment.Vision and Strategy: Develop and implement a comprehensive vision for special education programs, aligning with district goals and best practices. Team Building: Lead and motivate a team of special education teachers, administrators, therapists, and related service providers. Collaboration: Foster strong partnerships with school leadership, parents, community agencies, and other stakeholders to support student strengths, needs, and transition services. Advocacy: Represent the needs of students with disabilities at district and state levels, ensuring equitable access to educational opportunities.Program Oversight and DevelopmentCurriculum Development: Ensure the special education classrooms are provided curriculum that is aligned with state standards, differentiated for individual needs, and regularly reviewed for effectiveness.IEP Implementation: Monitor the development and implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for all eligible students, showing growth and progress over time as a bridge to the general educational programs.Assessment and Evaluation: Using data to oversee all aspects of special education programs, including the use of appropriate assessments, aligned to the general education curriculum, to track student progress and inform program adjustments, IEP goal accomplishments.Compliance: Maintain compliance with federal and state special education regulations, including reporting requirements and assessments.. Conduct staff training and professional development opportunities related to special education best practices, including evidence based practices in the classroom, PBIS based behavior supports, and transition services.. Review and approve special education placements and service delivery models.Review and revise existing systems and procedures within the Special Education department for optimal performance and outcomes Model and oversee the facilitation of IEP meetings with parents, teachers, and related service providers Investigate and address concerns related to student access to the general education programs, accommodations, and modifications. Monitor student data to identify trends and areas for improvement across programs, grade bands and content areas.Participate in the development of district-wide initiatives to support students with disabilities.Budget and Resource ManagementFinancial Oversight: Manage the special education budget, allocating funds effectively for staff, materials, equipment, and related services.Resource Allocation: Prioritize and distribute resources to support individual student needs and programs.Cost Analysis: Monitor program expenditures and identify areas for cost-effectiveness.Community and Stakeholder EngagementServes as the district’s liaison with parents, community members, and local organizations regarding special education programming, to include transition services.Coordinates with building principals regarding special education programming and student needs.Promotes student engagement and equitable access to athletics and wellness programs, ensuring all students feel valued and supported.Accepts other duties as assigned.Additional DutiesPerforms other related tasks as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools.Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesStrong leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.In-depth knowledge of special education curricula, including instructional best practices.Expertise in special education administration, including budgeting, scheduling, and compliance.Knowledge of Federal and New York State Education Department special education regulations and guidelines.Ability to collaborate effectively with students, families, staff, and community stakeholders.QUALIFICATIONS:Appropriate NYS certification as a School District Leader and Special Education teacher or Related ServicesAt least five years of successful teaching and administrative experience preferredREPORTS TO:Superintendent of Schools Anticipated Start Date: July 1, 2025 or soonerApplications will be collected until the position is filled.
