TITLE: TEACHING ASSISTANT Certified PositionFull-time, 10-month position Affiliation: Teachers’ AssociationVocational / CTE Department Location: TST BOCES, Career & Tech. Center Culinary Arts Program – Powell Building The CTE Culinary program at TST BOCES engages students in various culinary arts areas, including safety and sanitation, food preparation, cooking, restaurant management, hospitality, customer service, menu planning, and marketing. The curriculum also emphasizes professionalism, communication, problem-solving, and teamwork. DUTIES:Provide direct instructional services to students under the general supervision of a NYS certified teacher. Small group instruction, lab demonstrations, technology assistance, cash handling skills, culinary knowledge, errands in relation to the program demands, classroom management/subbing when necessary, other duties as assigned, kitchen management (the ability to multitask in a fast paced environment), communication with outside agencies, helping with safety and sanitation. In collaboration with the teacher, maintain all necessary records, pupil and program record keeping and adhere to all mandated services for students Individual Education Plans. Desired Traits include: Student friendly, Personable with students and peers, Approachable, Reliable, Strong work ethic, Flexible, Sees the best in others, Creative and Ability to work additional contracted hours as needed Key Responsibilities:Support Instruction- Assist the lead teacher in delivering a comprehensive curriculum in culinaryand pastry arts, ensuring students understand the fundamentals of safety, sanitation, and foodpreparation.Classroom Management- Help maintain a positive and productive learning environment bysupervising students during hands-on activities and classroom instruction.Student Assistance- Provide individualized support to students, including those with diverselearning needs, helping them with tasks such as equipment operation, recipe execution, andtime management.Preparation of Materials- Assist in the preparation and organization of instructional materials,including setting up for cooking demonstrations, labs, and other classroom activities.Safety and Sanitation- Reinforce safety and sanitation standards by monitoring students duringfood preparation and ensuring all equipment and workspaces are clean and properlymaintained.Record Keeping- Support the lead teacher in maintaining accurate student records, includingattendance, assignment completion, and progress reports.Communication- Help facilitate communication between the lead teacher, home schools, andparents regarding student progress and needs.Team Collaboration-Work collaboratively with the lead teacher and other staff members tosupport the overall goals of the culinary program and contribute to a positive team environment.Professionalism-Model professional behavior, including effective communication, teamwork, andproblem-solving skills.Additional Duties-Perform other duties as assigned to support the smooth operation of theculinary program. This job description outlines the role of a Teacher Assistant within the CTE Culinary program, highlighting the importance of supporting both the instructional and operational aspects of the program. QUALIFICATIONS: New York State Teaching Assistant Certificate Level 1, 2, 3 or Pre-Professional. The Teaching Assistant for the CTE Culinary Arts Program should be knowledgeable in the field of culinary arts. Experience and education in the field of culinary is desired. The setting is working with high school aged students in both the classroom and lab setting. Technology comfort and experience is a plus. Familiarity with classroom routine, ability to communicate effectively and dependability are critical characteristics. Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position; must be able to lift 40 pounds. Must possess excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
