A required fee of $101.75 must be paid by debit or credit card to the New York State Education Department.Approved by Douglas Kelley, Interim Superintendent of SchoolsCIVIL SERVICE JOB DUTIES & QUALIFICATIONSBookkeeperDISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:This is important bookkeeping or semi-technical accounting work involving the responsibility for independently maintaining a set of general books in accordance with general and infrequent instructions. Double entry bookkeeping is not a requirement of this position. The work is performed under the supervision and may involve the supervision of clerical subordinates. Candidate is expected to perform related work, as required.TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)Checks payrolls and keeps various financial records of county funds;Collects taxes and other cash receipts and enters them into a daily receipt book;Maintains general and subsidiary journals and ledgers;Audits and allocates appropriation vouchers and takes trial balances;Prepares financial statements;May occasionally do typing or related clerical work;For Health related department/facilities may also be responsible for Medicaid/Medicare billing;FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:Good knowledge of office terminology, procedures and equipment; good knowledge of business arithmetic; practical working knowledge of single entry bookkeeping; ability to get along well with others and to understand and follow oral and written directions; clerical aptitude; ability to type; good accounting judgment; neatness of appearance; tact and courtesy; knowledge of computer operations; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:(a) Graduation from a regionally accredited New York State registered two-year college or university with an Associate Degree in Accounting; OR(b) Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma and two years of experience in clerical work of which one shall have involved the keeping of books and financial records in a responsible capacity; OR(c) an equivalent combination of training and experience as indicated in the limits of (a) or (b).REVISED BY CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION AUGUST 31, 1987Adopted by Columbia County Civil Service Commission September 10,1996 - Competitive (reviewed 10/97).Reviewed 8/00Reviewed 9/02Updated 4/17/03Amended – 2/17/16 – COLUMBIA COUNTY CIVIL SERVICE – COMPETITIVEApply on OLAS
