Position: ASL Interpreter– Part Time (2 days/week)Days/Hours: Wednesday (8am-4pm) & another day (8am-3pm) to be mutually agreed uponReports to: Supervisor of Instruction & OperationsStart Date: ImmediatelySt. Francis de Sales School for the Deaf in Brooklyn seeks an experienced ASL Interpreter on a part time basis. As the ASL interpreter you will play a vital role in facilitating effective communication among Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing, DeafBlind & hearing individuals within our school building. Your expertise will ensure that all individuals have equal access to information, services, and opportunities. This contract position has a broad scope of responsibilities as outlined below.GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIESInterpretation: Facilitate communication for Deaf/Hard of Hearing and DeafBlind individuals during meetings, classrooms, and other school events to accurately convey tone, nuance, and cultural context.Cultural Competence: Maintain a deep understanding of Deaf culture, community norms, and linguistic nuances to provide accurate and culturally respectful interpretation servicesConfidentiality: Uphold strict confidentiality and ethical standards when interpreting, respecting the privacy of all parties involved.Preparation: Familiarize yourself with the context and subject matter of the communication in advance, when possible, to enhance the accuracy of interpretation.Adaptability: Adjust your interpretation style and techniques to meet the diverse communication preferences of varied communication modalities PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONSRID and/or BEI Certification, requiredPrior experience as an ASL interpreter, requiredKnowledge of Tactile- ASL, requiredEducational Setting experience, preferredKnowledge of ProTactile, preferred PERSONAL QUALITIESCapacity to manage multiple responsibilities and competing demandsDemonstrate ability to work in a calm and respectful mannerCommitment to fostering a collaborative, professional, and respectful work environment COMPENSATIONSt. Francis offers a competitive rate commensurate with the experience and credentials. The range for this part time contractor position is anticipated to be in the range of $50 - $75 an hour. ABOUT THE SCHOOLFounded in 1960, St. Francis de Sales School for the Deaf (SFDS) is a privately owned, state supported school for Deaf students from birth through 8th grade located in the Prospect Heights section of Brooklyn. SFDS offers a Parent Infant Program (Ages 0-3), an Early Childhood Program (Ages 3-5) and a School Age Program (Grades K-8). Students attending SFDS are Deaf, DeafBlind, Functionally Deaf and Deaf Disabled. The school’s mission is to educate the whole child utilizing best practices through a multimodal – multilingual communication approach in an inclusive, barrier-free environment so that each student develops academically, linguistically, physically, socially and emotionally.
