Anticipated position, starting September 2025, full-time, 10 months, benefit package. Must hold NYS teacher certification in ELA 7-12. Qualifications: NYS Education Department Certification in the required in secondary ELA, Master’s Degree preferred, demonstrable effective teaching skills, evidence of excellent background and knowledge, outstanding preparation and/or experience may be substituted for some of the above qualifications, a deep belief in the potential of all students and a commitment to educational equity, experience or interest in inquiry-based and student-centered teaching practices, willingness to implement AVID strategies and participate in ongoing training and collaboration, strong classroom management, communication, and organizational skills, and passion for fostering student growth in both academic and social-emotional domains. General Responsibilities: We are seeking a passionate, student-centered educator to join our team as an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) teacher. The AVID program is designed to close the opportunity gap by transforming traditional classrooms into collaborative, inquiry-based environments where all students are supported to achieve at the highest levels. AVID teachers play a pivotal role in shifting classroom dynamics-from delivering content to facilitating learning-empowering students to take ownership of their education through critical thinking, collaboration, and self-advocacy. Key Responsibilities: Facilitate an inquiry-based, student-centric classroom environment that emphasizes collaboration and problem-solving. Integrate AVID strategies and tools into existing curricula to enhance student engagement and academic success, without requiring a new curriculum. Promote the development of essential academic behaviors such as note-taking, studying, organization, and effective communication. Implement AVID methodologies including Socratic Seminars, Collaborative Study Groups, Philosophical Chairs, and peer tutoring to promote active learning. Encourage students to reflect, ask questions, articulate their thinking, and seek out resources to support their understanding. Participate in ongoing AVID professional learning to stay current with best practices and continually enhance teaching effectiveness. Serve as an advocate for student potential, challenging assumptions and helping all students recognize their capacity for success. Collaborate with the AVID Site Team and other educators to support schoolwide implementation of AVID strategies. Why AVID? AVID educators are changemakers.
