Title: Director of Special Education and Related ServicesReports to: Superintendent of SchoolsSupervises: Supervisor of Special education: overseas all areas of special education and provisions of services to students with special needs, special education teachers, school psychologists, speech and language teachers, social workers, special education educational aides, teaching assistants, clerical staffGoal: To improve student academic achievement, behavior, and social emotional health by providing inclusive special education programs, services, and differentiated instruction in accordance with students’ Individualized Education Plans and 504 Accommodation Plans Job Responsibilities: The Director of Special Education and Related Services will perform the following duties and all other responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools:Direct and steward the delivery of all special education services recommended by the CSE/CPSE and approved by the Board of EducationOversee the Supervisor of Special Education, CSE Chairperson, CPSE and Section 504 Team, and serve in this capacity as neededSupport school leaders in the utilization of inclusive special services as provided by special education teachers, school psychologists, speech teachers, social workers, and related services providersCollaborate with central administration and school leaders to determine special education staff assignments to best meet students’ individual needsAssist in recruiting and screening applicants for special education vacancies and make recommendations to the Superintendent for hiringMeet regularly with school leaders and attend staff meetings upon request of school leadersRecommend to the Superintendent inclusive programs and engaging curriculum that promote students’ individual needsPrepare and enact long range plan as aligned with district’s ongoing budget planningWork with central office administrators and school leaders in the preparation of district budget and project student needs accurately and in accordance with the budget calendar and Board of Education budget presentationsPartner and engage with Special Education Parent Teacher Association (SEPTA) while attending regularly scheduled meetingsAssist Office of Curriculum and Instruction in reviewing, enhancing and guiding district’s Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and Response to Intervention (RTI) frameworks that encompass academic, behavior, and social emotional learning for studentsSupport Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction with providing professional development for special education teachers, educational aides, teaching assistants, and related service providersServe as point of contact for School Nurse Association of South Orangetown (SNASO) and nurse team leaderSupport district in identifying and securing consultant to conduct a review of special education programming and related servicesEnsure district procedural compliance with Part 200 of the Commissioner’s Regulations regarding special education and maintain current knowledge of procedural changes in such regulationsLead the development of the district’s plan for the IDEA 611/619 grants and ensure compliance with all New York State Education Department requirements and deadlines as well as maintain alignment with local, regional and national trendsReview and approve school requests for homebound instruction and coordinate tutoring services for home/hospital-based services and compliance with the McKinney-Vento Homeless ActMaintain all student records related to special educationCoordinate state testing student accommodations and exemptions through collaborating with school leaders, teachers, and staff, while ensuring the CSE reporting categories required by state agencies are submitted accurately and on timeAll other duties and responsibilities as designated by the Superintendent
