This is a unique opportunity to lead a comprehensive high school in a vibrant and historically rich community on the East End of Long Island. About the District:The Southampton Union Free School District is a Pre-K through 12th-grade district with approximately 1,300- 1,400 students across three schools: Southampton Elementary School, Southampton Intermediate School, and Southampton High School. Located in the picturesque Town of Southampton, roughly 100 miles east of New York City, the district serves a diverse student population and is deeply embedded in its community. Notably, our district is situated in close proximity to the Shinnecock Nation, an Indigenous sovereign nation whose historical and ongoing contribution enrich the cultural landscape of our region. Position Summary: The Coordinator of Special Education supports the planning, implementation, and oversight of special education services within the district. This role includes serving as a Committee on Special Education (CSE) Chairperson, overseeing Extended School Year (ESY) programming, coordinating transition services/off-site work placements, and providing supervision and support to special education staff. The Coordinator ensures compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations and fosters effective communication among families, service providers, and school teams. Key Responsibilities: CSE Chairperson Duties: Serve as the district-appointed Chairperson for CSE meetings (initial, annual, reevaluation, and program reviews).Facilitate legally compliant CSE processes including scheduling, notice of meetings, and documentation.Ensure development of high-quality, individualized IEPs aligned with student needs and state standards.Maintain compliance with IDEA, NYSED regulations, and district policies.Collaborate with psychologists, service providers, families, and general education staff to support student success.Prepare IEP Direct listings and collaborate with the District Test liaison regarding testing accommodations Extended School Year (ESY) Oversight: Plan and coordinate all aspects of ESY services including student eligibility, staffing, scheduling, and transportation.Ensure all ESY IEP services are implemented with fidelity.Supervise ESY staff and ensure compliance with safety, instructional, and programmatic expectations.Serve as liaison between ESY program sites, families, and district administration. Transition & Off-Site Program Coordination: Coordinate transition services for students aged 14 and older, ensuring age-appropriate planning and alignment with postsecondary goals.Facilitate partnerships with community agencies, vocational programs, and service providers.Monitor student progress in off-site programs through communication with providers and review of progress reports. Staff Supervision & Support: Supervise and evaluate assigned special education staff (e.g., special education teachers, teaching assistants, related service providers).Provide ongoing coaching, professional development, and feedback to support instructional quality and compliance.Assist in recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of special education personnel.Promote inclusive practices and collaborate with building administrators to support the integration of students with disabilities. Collaboration: The Coordinator of Special Education will collaborate with a variety of stakeholders, such as the Community and Shinnecock liaisons, community partners, families, as well as instructional administrators. And any other duties as assigned by the Director of Pupil Personnel Services. Qualifications: Required:Master's degree in Special Education or related field.Valid NYS certification in School District Leader (SDL) or School District Administrator (SDA) and appropriate CSE Chair certification.Minimum of 5 years of experience in special education, including leadership roles.In-depth knowledge of IDEA, Part 200 of NYS Regulations, and current best practices in special education.Preferred:Experience serving as a CSE Chairperson.School PsychologistExperience supervising staff or managing special education programs.Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. Work Environment & Physical Demands: Work is performed in school buildings, office settings, and off-site program locations.Must be able to travel between district buildings and to external placement sites.Occasional evening hours required for CSE meetings or family engagement events.
