The Schenectady City School District is seeking an experienced transition counselor skilled at collaborating and communicating with community members, agencies and other professionals to best meet the identified needs of students. The transition counselor will prepare our students for post school programming by maximizing their potential and ability to gain the greatest level of individual independence. This will be done by assessing students’ life and vocational skills, planning appropriately ambitious programming that can be generalized across settings, reviewing and evaluating progress at regular intervals with an interdisciplinary team, and planning for continued growth. This person will also work closely with various departments and agencies, both internally and externally. Preference will be given to applicants with CTE experience working in a high needs district and those that are either bilingual or multilingual. Knowledge of special education regulations pertaining to transition, including level 1 and level 2 assessments, school-to-career programming and development, NYS graduation pathways including CDOS and SACC credentials, and strong background in career and technical education and work-based learning.Job Responsibilities Include (but not limited to):* Researches educational and career opportunities, and coordinates with teachers, resource specialists, and business and community organizations for the purpose of providing information, and making recommendations;* Assist with career development of students through career cluster, extended learning opportunities and employability skills;* Conduct student interest and aptitude assessments and interpret results for the students & parents, as well as for the purpose of programming and planning;* Coordinates with administrators and other teaching staff members to ascertain individual student's abilities and needs, including students with special needs, and to familiarize stakeholders with intervention/counseling services;* Assist in screening, interviewing, and selecting qualified students for work-based learning experiences;* Assists students in evaluating their strengths through the interpretation of academic, personal/social, and college/career readiness assessments;* Collect and monitor student worker evaluations and, if necessary, develop work improvement plans with the students;* Maintains career plan, work evaluations, timesheets and employability profiles for students;* Serves as an advocate to students/families in order to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding, and maturity;* Work closely with district staff, families, students, community businesses and outside agencies to achieve effective school to work transition;* Obtains and disseminates information regarding post-secondary opportunities to students/families;* Disseminate information on work-based learning programs to employers, families, staff, students and counselors;* Serve as a liaison between the district and employers;* Assist school personnel and postsecondary representatives in defining needs, developing plans, establishing goals and formulating policies and procedures for program development;* Recruit new businesses and organizations to provide quality work-based and school-based learning opportunities for students;* Collaborates with community partners for the purpose of providing positive and proactive post-secondary planning resources;* Communicate with and visit businesses on a regular basis.Job QualificationsThe successful candidate possesses:* Knowledge of Common Core Learning Standards and College and Career Readiness skills;* Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability and experience to network and collaborate at all levels;* Ability to build strong relationships with students, staff, families and community business leaders;* Ability to develop, supervise and complete projects;* Excellent organizational, verbal, and written communication skills;* NYS School Counselor Certification with a minimum of three (3) years’ experience in work based learning, Career and Technical Education (CTE) preferred
