The Syracuse City School District is continuing a standard of excellence in innovation and transformation with the goal of ensuring that all students graduate high school with the skills needed to be ready for college and career. For Syracuse, all means all - including students who fall behind or have been considered "hard to serve" for a host of reasons. The School Board and Syracuse community have charged the Superintendent with improving student achievement, and he is seeking a dedicated and diverse team of school leaders and teachers to partner with him in moving the district toward its goals. The Syracuse City School District represents 34 schools and 4 alternative education programs, serving 21,000+ students Pre-K-12 of whom 77% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, 18% are served by the Office of Special Education and 78% are students of color. OVERVIEW:The city of Syracuse, the Syracuse City School District, Onondaga County and Onondaga, Cortland and Madison County BOCES are collaborating on the region's first ever STEAM high school. The high school will offer a rigorous academic curriculum with a focus on STEAM. The school will be open to students from the SCSD as well as from the OCM BOCES component school districts. A key element to the success of the high school will be the business partnerships. In Central New York there is a unique opportunity for collaboration amongst all stakeholders with an interest in a thriving urban core. Working in collaboration with CenterState CEO and MACNY, this high school will bring together the top companies and arts organizations in the respective fields of STEAM. These industry leaders will provide us with their expertise as well as in areas of mentoring, internships and job shadows. Central New York's colleges and universities have some of the greatest resources available in all of the STEAM disciplines. Our students will be able to take advantage of these resources and in some cases take college courses alongside university and college students. The school will offer programming in Animation and Game Design, Business Entrepreneurship, Construction Management, Data Analytics, Entertainment Engineering, Robotics and Automation, Semiconductor Microchip Technology, and the Fine Arts. Our IDEAL Candidate WILL:Be passionately committed to urban and suburban education.Believe strongly that all students can learn at high levels.Demonstrate a commitment to serving urban and suburban students, schools and communities, and to closing achievement gaps.Actively contribute to a culture of high expectations in school and within the district.Be culturally responsive to students, families and our communities.Adapt seamlessly to the complexities of the urban and suburban school environment.Our IDEAL Candidate will SPECIFICALLY:Report to the building Principal and will work with the Career and Technical Education administrative team.Deliver performance-based objectives and outlines for course of study following NYSED curriculum guidelines and requirements.Organize practical and technical instruction, including demonstrations of skills required in the Robotics and Automation professions, lectures in theory, techniques, and terminology.Willingly seek approval to teach concurrent enrollment/college-level coursework.Reinforce a high level of integrity with students as they acquire technical skills in: Robotics and Automation professions.Present subject matter to students, utilizing a variety of methods and techniques, such as discussions, demonstrations and/or active lab activities.Be willing to invite and host industry professionals into the classroom to engage and support the program consistently and on a variety of levels.Assist students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments to present or reinforce learning objectives.Enforce classroom protocols, lab safety rules, and expectations; maintain classroom discipline; utilize effective classroom management techniques.Attend meetings and trainings per requirements of school Principal and the school district.Work both independently and as part of a team.Work effectively with students, peers, parents and within the community.Ensure all students have a minimum of 60 hours of authentic work-based-learning experiences.Will be a role model and will actively teach students how to behave professionally on a daily basis.Update and maintain an industry relevant Employability Profile.Select a NYS approved Technical Assessment and be responsible for administering and recording assessment data each year.Ensure students create a portfolio that is in alignment with NYS requirements.Chair advisory committee meetings, actively engage in the CTE re-approval process and maintain solid relationships with post-secondary and industry partners.Participate in various student recruitment events for the Regional STEAM High School.Engage in professional development regarding a variety of effective pedagogy practices. Essential ResponsibilitiesThe Robotics and Automation Teacher will work hands-on, alongside students to help build and deliver the school's Robotics and Automation program through:Teaching Robotics and Automation courses to students in a hands-on and dynamic manner;Ensuring a wide breadth of Robotics and Automation fundamentals are taught, including the following: the fundamentals of robotic technologies, its currency in the job market, and its applicability to everyday life, how robotic technologies impact the environment, society, and the economy, the manufacturing industry and the various activities that are required to create a product as a context for their work with robotics and automation, focus on workplace safety and essential skills in math and measurement, the basics of how to design, program, and interface robotic and automated devices with computer systems, study mechanical and electrical concepts, including sources of energy, electrical safety, identification and use of basic mechanical and electronic components, such as sensors, actuators, and effectors, and engineering design concepts, including computer-aided design, design testing, programming, and proper documentation of projects.Maintaining and updating existing course material and exercises based on changes in technology, methodologies, and/or changing students' needs;Researching current practices and training methods in Robotics and Automation to identify areas for new course development or improvement;Provide instruction that is relevant to current and future work specifications and job opportunities within the occupational area;Providing assessments of student proficiency and improvement;For further details on our expectations for classroom educators, explore the SCSD Teaching and Learning Framework. (https://www.syracusecityschools.com/tfiles/folder9565/Building%20Leadership%20Framework.pdf) QUALIFICATIONS:The ideal candidate must have at least two years of professional experience in the Robotics and Automation sectors, or hold a Technology teacher degree from the New York State.Associate's degree in Robotics and Automation or a related technical field or higher degree.At least 2-5 years of demonstrated success in Robotics and Automation industry.Strong communication skills, and ability to function in a fast-paced student-centered environment.Meet requirements to qualify for and then earn a "Transitional A" teacher certificate from the New York State Education Department, which permits the employment of an individual in a specific career and technical education title.
