Position Title: Elementary Special Education Teacher - Anticipated Classification: Instructional 10 months Salary: Per STA Contract Immediately Responsible to: Building Principal & Director of Special EducationRequirements:Willingness to become certified in Wilson Reading. Minimum Qualifications:Required: Must possess a valid NYS Certification of Students with Disabilities K-6 or Similar CertificatePhilosophical compatibility with the stated mission and goals of the School DistrictExtensive knowledge of curriculum design and InstructionPreferred: Dual Certification (Elementary, Literacy, Secondary Science or Other Secondary Content Area) Experience Teaching ENL StudentsSuccessful Teaching ExperienceExperience analyzing data to improve student achievement Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable. Job Summary or Functions:Under the direction of the Building Principal and Director of Special Education, the Certified Special Education Teacher develops and provides specialized instruction to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities; Evaluates and assesses student progress against instructional objectives; follows State-mandated due process procedures and functions as IEP Manager to assigned students. Specific Responsibilities:Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to student learning and supports District Goals.Provides research-based specialized instruction to address the instructional goals and objectives contained within each student’s IEP. Assesses student progress and determines the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional techniques. Employs various teaching techniques, methods and principles of learning to enable students to meet their IEP goals. Develops and implements annual Individualized Educational Program (IEP) plans for students to include: present levels of educational performance, special education needs, instructional goals and objectives, and the special education and related services required to meet those goals.Schedules team meetings and works cooperatively with team members and others in developing instructional goals and strategies. Coordinates the delivery of special education services in each student's IEP.Conducts special education evaluations and reevaluations. Provides direction, supervision and evaluation of educational assistants as directed. Complies with School Board policies and all state/federal rules and regulations. Completes all district and state reporting requirements.Develops and administers school curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction.Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs; conducts individual and small group instruction as needed.Supports student’s social-emotional needs. Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops and/or professional/staff meetings.Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.Ensures that student conduct conforms with the school's standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.Selects and requisitions appropriate books, instructional aids and other supplies and equipment and maintains inventory records.Supervises students in activities that take place out of the classroom during the school day.Administers standardized tests in accordance with District testing programs.Performs such additional duties as may be assigned by Supervisors.Evaluation: The evaluation of the person filling this position is conducted by a certified administrator according to the current Bargaining Agreement and APPR plan.
